US music melodrama Nashville, starring Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere, has been axed by ABC after 4 seasons.

The show’s ratings slipped to an all-time series low with its mid-season finale, at 4.137 million total viewers, in live-plus-same-day data.

But co-producers Lionsgate TV is said to be interested in shopping the series to other networks.

Lionsgate recently hired veteran producers Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick (My So-Called Life) as new showrunners, who have been working with writers on stories for a potential new season.

Updates not withstanding, its season finale on May 25 will serve as its US series finale.

It airs in Australia on SoHo.

  1. Apparently Haydn Panetierre’s on-going post-natal depression forced late re-writes to this season, which is why she is missing from most early episodes, and her inability to re-sign for next season has left them in turmoil. So sad as her character makes the show, so even if they were to find another home, Nashville wouldn’t be the same without her.

  2. The music may not be over yet for TV’s Nashville. Though ABC has canceled the show, its producers are trying to save Nashville by taking it to another network.
The decision to cancel the show was so sudden that even the actors didn’t know about it until right around the same time the news broke online. There had been some positive signs that Nashville would get a fifth season; Lionsgate TV had hired two Emmy-winning producers to come in and help tweak the show, and they were reportedly working on storylines for next year when the news came down.
The show’s loyal fans have been venting online since Thursday (May 12) when the story broke, speculating all manner of reasons why Nashville got the axe. But the producers of the show aren’t packing up the sets and leaving town just yet; in fact, they’re trying as hard as they can to save the show.

  3. I’m sad its been axed.. But S4 has had a terrible story arc so I understand the drop in ratings.
With just 3 eps to go I doubt the messy story lines will be tied up. Maybe the writers had a heads up to write a finale.

    1. Yeah, thoroughly agree about the story arcs – it has really felt like the show is just spinning its wheels creatively this season, which is probably why Lionsgate had brought in Ed Zwick and another party to head up creative if it had gone to a 5th season. I’m also struggling to remember one song this season that has been memorable, getting away from the music I would imagine has also played a role in its demise as they’d be generating less revenue from music purchases on itunes.

I am sad I won’t get to see whether Ed Zwick could’ve revitalised the show, but it is usually hard to regenerate ratings for a show this far into its run. I suppose the glimmer of hope here is that Lionsgate having brought in Zwick would be more fervent in their efforts to shop it around – Tennessee’s decision to bring in a transgender bathroom law will undoubtedly cause issues though.

  4. Whilst I do not watch it on PayTV I have all three seasons on DVD, and awaiting series 4 on DVD. I love it as my friends do also.
