Livinia Nixon would “absolutely” return for more Hey Hey

Postcards, Getaway, Nine News -and anywhere Hey Hey surfaces- Livinia Nixon is as loyal as they come.

On Sunday TV Tonight caught up with Livinia Nixon, now in her 19th year with the Nine Network.

Nixon, who first began on Plucka’s Place, was attending her 18th Logie Awards.

“We used to iron my hair at home on the ironing board and catch a taxi in. It’s a little bit different now!” she laughed.

Unlike JoBeth Taylor, Nixon says she would happily return for any new Hey Hey it’s Saturday, specials or otherwise.

“Yes I absolutely would. I love spending time with people like that, and Daryl’s a great person to learn from. Watching him in different situations I learned a lot from his producing style.”

But she was also shocked to discover Daryl Somers has not yet been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

“Isn’t he? He’s had an amazing stellar, long, distinguished career. It might happen. There’s still time!”

These days Nixon now presents on Postcards, Getaway, and weather for Nine News Melbourne. Her travel roles, especially on Getaway, provide the best of both worlds.

“It’s the best job because I get to do it occasionally. I get to be home with my children for school runs and tuck them in at night, but then I also look forward to a sneaky overseas trip to Europe for 2 weeks,” she continued.

“I love learning. I’ve always said that, working in different mediums such. I love doing Live News, I love doing Live Entertainment and pre-recorded Travel shows. For me it’s about constantly learning.

“As long as I’m doing that and Nine will keep me, I’m very happy.”

  1. I loved Hey Hey. Started watching it when i was 5 in 1971. It was like the show grew up with me but I think it’s time for everyone to move on. Everyone on the show is just getting too old now. Could maybe work with Grant Denyer at the helm

  2. I really don’t see what would be wrong with Hey Hey returning , good wholesome fun , without the non stop political dribble we get nowadays , the only reason I believe people get so worked up over It , Is because certain cast members to them have past the age limit and perish the thought of having people over 60 on our screens .

    1. Well, from Nine’s perspective, the thing that would be wrong is that hardly anybody would watch it.

I really don’t think that most people who are not in favour of it returning think that because of the age of the cast. Think it has more to do with the show being a product of its time, like Etch-a-sketch and pet rocks. This time has well and truly passed.

      1. Well Melbourne people alone were watching the last batch of episodes , I believe there were only a few times that It didn’t go over the million mark , a lot of current shows would kill for those kind of ratings , and people tend to forget , while they stuck to the old format as such , there was still new and current talent performing on the show ( Australian country music never had It so good ) plus at the time and still to this day there’s sadly only morning shows In this country for musical acts to perform on , but “product of It’s time”?? like maybe a second rate 70’s Hanna Barbera cartoon ????

        1. Maybe you meant “Melbourne people, alone, were watching the last batch of episodes”? Because let’s face it, Hey Hey was, at its heart, a very Melbourne show…

FWIW, the last batch of episodes suffered from plummeting ratings – it was picking up just 800k on nights when Masterchef was pulling over 2 million, and even Spicks & Specks on the ABC was pulling over 1.25 million.

          How times have changed…

IIRC, the last ever episode rose up on one elbow, gave a last gasp, and managed just over a million – or about 20th for the night.

        2. That was 6 years ago when there were hardly any multichannels and most people hadn’t even heard of Netflix or torrents. Lots of shows got over a millions viewers and some comfortably over 2M.

If Nine thought it would do those numbers now, it would already be on our screens instead of the dreck they have now.

          1. 800k then is more like ~< 400k in today's numbers. It wouldn't even make the top 20 on an average night, and wouldn't be too far from multichannel figures…

  3. Please let Hey Hey stay in the past, stop dredging it up, it had its time & place in Australian culture, that time & culture has changed while Hey Hey cannot change, leave it as a fond memory & not a modern day joke
