Logies too long even for Nine boss

"It was a great telecast. It went a little long, I'll agree," says Hugh Marks.

If you thought the Logie Awards went on too long, you’re not alone.

Earlier this week Nine CEO Hugh Marks told Nine talent and media, “It was a great telecast. It went a little long, I’ll agree. Put a microphone in front of this lot and boy they love to talk. Funny that,” he said.

But Marks, who was attending on his 25th wedding anniversary, also said the event also meant something to those in attendance.

“I think we live in a very cynical and critical industry and the positivity that I felt in the room…. ‘diversity’ was the word of the night I came out of it feeling it was an industry with a bit of momentum.

“The makers, the performers…. it’s an event, a celebration. That positivity in the room is something we need to focus on as an industry and continue. All too often we’re critical of each other rather than focussing on the audience. It’s the audiences that matter and the creative people who make this industry that matter.”

He was sure to congratulate exec producer Brent Williams and Melbourne Head of Production and Programming, Tim Cleary.

Observers this week have suggested the length could be trimmed by staging a separate ‘US-style’ Hall of Fame ceremony. That idea could also see more faces and shows inducted, instead of one individual, as television reaches 60 years and more veterans. But finding a way to finance a separate event could prove to be a challenge, if it were to be considered.

  1. It was long and could easily have been shortened in a few ways.

    1. Presenter banter was too long (a minute at the most)
    2. Cut off speeches (anything over 3-4 minutes is too long)
    3. No need to introduce each nominee and then re-introduce them with clips in a video package (took twice as long)
    4. Sorry but the hall of fame video package was too long
    5. Unnecessary musical performances (and Molly Meldrum’s introduction of Delta Goodrem was, again, way too long)

  2. I tuned in at the start of the presentation for Noni Hazlehurst and felt that the introductions and package for her Hall Of Fame award were too long. Also, the banter between award presenters often lasted longer than the winner’s speech. And they had the nerve to try and cut short the speeches by the producers and cast of Ready For This.

  3. i agree.
    next year this how it should go;
    6pm-6.30pm news
    6.30pm-7.00pm RedCarpet
    7pm-10.45pm Logies Coverage
Dont have the presenters and voice over guy repeat the same thing(its confusing to some).

  4. At least cut back the news to 30 mins and start red carpet at 6.30. Also, I found it annoying that the nominees got read out by the hosts, and then repeated in the video montage, a lot of time could be cut out by combining the two.

  5. Too much fluff and fill in. In the previous few years the logies finished on time. And how funny it was that the speeches for Play School were made to hurry up, yet others didn’t face this.

  6. Ir ran an hour over. I did laugh when Hughesy said if you are taping this then you would have thought Jimmy Barnes won the gold because thats when it would have cut off.
