It’s usually a good sign when Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy, American Dad, Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey) puts his name to something, and FOX has announced he will will create, star in and executive produce a dramedy set in space.

The untitled project, which has been given a straight-to-series order is set 300 years in the future and follows the adventures of the Orville, an exploratory ship in Earth’s interstellar fleet. Facing cosmic challenges from without and within, the motley crew of space explorers will “boldly go where no comedic drama has gone before.”

Production on the pilot for the series, produced by 20th Century Fox TV, will begin in late 2016. MacFarlane has had a longstanding first-look deal with the studio, headed by FOX Television Group CEOs Gary Newman and Dana Walden.

“I’ve wanted to do something like this show ever since I was a kid, and the timing finally feels right,” said MacFarlane. “20th and FOX have been good to me for many years, and of course, Dana and Gary have been fantastic bosses and true pals, so it was a no-brainer to come to them with the project. I think this is gonna be something special.”

It will premiere in the 2017-18 US season.
