If anybody needed good news right now it was the Nine Network, and last night sports fans gave them just that.
The State of Origin game scored a whopping 2.7m viewers -the biggest Origin audience of all time (and with regional figures it will rise to 3.95m viewers). It was easily the biggest audience of the year so far.
In Sydney alone it drew 1.19m viewers, with 809,000 watching in Brisbane and even a timeslot win with 494,000 in Melbourne. All up it delivered a massive 45.0% network share, more than double its nearest rival.
That left other networks to adjust as best they could.
While Seven had a staggered schedule in various states, TEN managed to pick up viewers elsewhere with MasterChef still holding its head up at 897,000 viewers.
Following Nine’s win the remaining shares were Seven 20.2%, TEN 17.2%, ABC 12.3% and SBS 5.2%.
In addition to Origin, Nine’s remaining numbers were Nine News (1.09m / 1.09m), A Current Affair (959,000), Hot Seat (623,000) and an NRL Rookie replay scored 444,000 in 3 cities.
Seven News was 1.12m / 995,000 for Seven then Home and Away (789,000) and The Chase (714,000 / 417,000). House Rules only screened in 3 cities with 480,000. Criminal Minds drew 446,000 / 335,000.
MasterChef Australia still did good business with 897,000 for TEN. The Project was 731,000 / 505,000, TEN Eyewitness News was 541,000, Shark Tank was 539,000. Movie: Stepmom was just 197,000.
ABC News drew 772,000 for ABC followed by 7:30 (564,000), Shaun Micallef’s Mad as Hell (505,000), QI (406,000), Moonman (349,000), Antiques Roadshow (317,000) and Would I Lie To You? (241,000).
On SBS it was Armada: 12 Days to Save England (216,000), 24 Hours in Emergency (211,000), SBS World News (152,000) and Bosch (111,000).
ABC2’s Go Jetters (247,000) topped multichannels.
Sunrise / Today: 338,000
ABC News Breakfast: 129,000 / 47,000.
OzTAM Overnights: Wednesday 1 June 2016

Just incase you didn’t know the state of origin last night was excusevly live and free yes it was excuesevly live and free they must have said that a million times
It wasn’t all live. The post match interviews with Cameron Smith and James Maloney were delayed. They were shown live on the (ad free) global feed (while nine were showing ads) before they screened on Nine. They still used the live watermark when showing those interviews.
terrific ratings for the SOO last night.
im loving the fact that the TodayShow beats Sunrise in the ratings.
Hey David how did TodayExtra do yesterday
Found Moonman, the last of the ABC Comedy Showroom pilots, pretty weak.
Am a fan of Lawrence and loved Dirty Laundry but this definitely wasn’t one of his better efforts – barely raised a laugh the whole way through.
Showed Harold from Neighbours in a whole new light though – he was the best thing about it…
Given the strong Origin ratings in Melbourne, you wonder if Seven might have regretted not holding off House Rules there as well. Might just be Adelaide and Perth with the normal schedule for game 2.
House Rules won’t be shown on Wednesdays after this week, as it is the last interior renovation of the season. Next week the show is scheduled to air on Sunday to Tuesday with factuals on 7.30pm Wednesday. I think factuals and specials will fill House Rules’ Wednesday timeslot until the Olympics.
Ah I see. No doubt they’ll be fine throwing some factuals up against Origin.
I was fairly annoyed when I watched the Origin match on SD in WA. The rest of the states screened this game in 9HD.
I Hope that Perth viewers got to see the rest of the Origin games on 9HD.
The excellent Shark Tank didn’t come on until 8:55pm last night – printed guides suggested 8:30pm…I thought the move to Wednesdays was meant to mean an earlier start
What’s a printed guide? 😉
Newspaper?
My epg had 8:50 as did the Tv guide on the Age/Herald website.
“While Seven had a staggered schedule in various states …”
You have to wonder if that wasn’t done deliberately to take the sting out any “Nine Trounces 7” headlines.
And 897k for Masterchef? That’s a drop of only, what, 50-60k for a Wednesday night edition? 10 will be pleased with the stickyness of that result…
No, it’s about knowing your audience. Seven adjusts scheduling around Origin in Syd / Bris every year. The headline would still be valid should somebody care to phrase.
Oh, I’m not bagging 7 for it – it’s definitely a strategy they use, and use well, quite often – but it does let them ‘pull out of the race’ a bit by side-stepping away from equivalent head-to-head numbers.
It’s also interesting that both the ABC & 10 went head-to-head against Origin with normal programming – and all bar 1 of their programs in those timeslots that are normally in the top 20 stayed in the top 20.
I am not a huge sports fan but watched the game last night with some mates. Was quite entertaining! Looking forward to the next match
Show it in HD (except Perth), and they came. #QLDer
Noticed The Project at 7pm has picked up since the yogies was on. Good on them.
The Yogies? Was that an intentional boo boo?
Excellent work. Smarter than average…
Also the fantastic Jeff Goldblum was on last night. They didn’t speak to him much unfortunately.
