Redundancies loom as Prime set to outsource

Exclusive: Canberra-based staff in discussion with Prime as it plans to outsource playout to MediaHub.

primeEXCLUSIVE: TV Tonight can reveal Prime7 is consulting with presentation and ingest staff as it looks to outsource operations, to MediaHub in Ingelburn, NSW.

Prime’s existing facilities have been stretched by technological changes in multiple markets, including being unable to add 7flix and a HD channel. Playout via MediaHub is expected before the end of the year.

TV Tonight understands 28 staff in Canberra are in discussion with management, although some may be offered other positions.

A Prime spokesperson confirmed it had commenced negotiations with staff, saying: “This is correct.”

Earlier this week Foxtel switched 7TWO to 7mate for satellite customers as Seven seeks to reach the biggest audience.

  1. Does Australia need the regional network level. They no longer cater for regional people, so will the government get rid of regional television? I know for a fact that they a big contributors to the liberal party. Now let’s see who are attached to television networks or the liberal party .

    1. One thing I think people tend to forget is these regional networks have massive broadcast infrastructure costs. It takes a significant chunk of their profits to maintain their networks, whereas metro networks don’t really have this burden. I personally think it makes business sense to let an affiliate like Prime7 take care of these huge costs, from the metro network’s perspective anyway.

So people in regional areas would watch metro TV? Now there’s a group that certainly don’t cater for regional people.

  2. Everything comes at a cost, including all of these extra garbage channels people are baying for that are usually watched by no more than 2% (120,000 in regional areas nationwide). Where the city networks have only 5 stations each the regionals have far more transmission facilities to cover a far smaller audience. Seven has had to engage MediaHub to playout 7flix as Seven doesn’t have ability to handle it. Something has to give, and it can only be staff or news centres to fund the added costs of extra channels.

  3. Obviously unfortunate for staff who will lose their jobs, but a must if Prime is to move with ever-changing technology. Its crazy that, in 2016, a major TV network can’t offer its viewers what the rest of us have available because of out dated facilities.
