Nine has denied rumours Today Extra may move to an automated production model, which would result in the loss of a studio camera crew.

Around Australia automated production, with “robotic” cameras being operated from control rooms, have become standard for News bulletins. ABC News Breakfast is also an automated production.

There are whispers within Nine that Today Extra, hosted by Sonia Kruger and David Campbell, could move from Studio 22 which it shares with Today, to an upstairs studio currently used for pre-recordings with international guests.

But Studio 23 is much smaller and the shift would directly impact staff including camera, sound, lighting, floor manager and staging -believed to be a saving of around $1m a year.

A Nine spokesperson denied any looming changes, saying “No plans for any of this.”

Despite a closer battle with The Morning Show this year, Today Extra is hoping to rise above unwelcome headlines. Last week Sonia Kruger drew created a furore following her call for the government to halt Muslim immigration to Australia.
