Veteran US actor John McMartin, who had a string of stage & screen roles, has died, aged 86.

The cause of death was cancer, according to Charlotte Moore, his companion and the artistic director of the Irish Repertory Theater.

McMartin was a favourite of directors Bob Fosse and Harold Prince and composer Stephen Sondheim, appearing in a string of theatrical successes including Sweet Charity (and later in the feature film), Kismet, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Follies, Saturn Returns, Into the Woods, The Great God Brown, Showboat, Grey Gardens, A Free Man of Color and All the Way.

His prolific TV credits included As the World Turns, Falcon Crest, Beauty and the Beast, Law and Order, Further Tales of the City, Oz, Frasier, Bob, Coach, Murder She Wrote, Cheers, Magnum PI, The Rockford Files, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Hart to Hart, The Bob Newhart Show, Hawaii Five-0, Love American Style, The Partridge Family, The Golden Girls, Marcus Welby MD, Medical Center and recently Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Other films included All the President’s Men, Kinsey, Brubaker, Butterflies, Blow Out, Pennies from Heaven and as an American ambassador on The Dish for Working Dog.

He once told The Chicago Tribune: ‘The lucky people are the ones that get to do what they enjoy doin’.

“That’s the way I feel about my work. I’m one of the lucky people.”

  1. Aaaww….Liked this actor…enjoyed his work…cannot recall anything he did…that I disliked…..which is a rare thing…..Respect.
