World Movies week of award winning cinema

The films have won multiple awards, including Golden Globes, Academy Awards and the Palme d’Or.

In August, World Movies will screen an award-winning week-long showcase of critically-acclaimed films.

All titles featured have won multiple awards, including Golden Globes, Academy Awards and the Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or.

They include Chinese martial-arts thriller The Assassin (winner of Cannes Film Festival Best Director and Best Soundtrack, winner of Palm Springs International Film Festival Best Foreign Film) and French crime-drama Dheepan (winner of Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or).

SBS General Manager of Subscription Television, Chris Keely, said: “We’re thrilled to bring some of the world’s most celebrated films to Australian audiences. With cutting-edge direction, cinematography, acting, music and other crafts, World Movies Presents: Award Winners is a prime example of the leading international cinema World Movies is known and loved for.”

The Assassin (2015)
Monday 1 August, 8.30pm
Set in the last years of the Tang Dynasty in China, an assassin must choose between love or duty when her master gives her orders to kill a man from her past.

Dheepan (2015)
Tuesday 2 August, 8.30pm
On the losing side of a civil war in Sri Lanka, a Tamil soldier poses as the husband and father of two other refugees in order to escape their ravaged homeland. Arriving in France, the makeshift family sets about establishing a new life, only to find themselves embroiled in violence.

Theeb (2014)
Wednesday 3 August, 8.30pm
In the Ottoman province of Hijaz, during World War I, a young Bedouin boy experiences a greatly hastened coming-of-age as he embarks on a perilous desert journey to guide a British officer to his secret destination.

Leviathan (2014)
Thursday 4 August, 8.30pm
Hot-headed car mechanic, Kolya is forced to fight the corrupt mayor of his coastal Russian town when plans to demolish his family home are revealed. Kolya recruits a lawyer friend to help, but his arrival only brings more misfortune for Kolya, his wife and teenage son.
