US character actor David Huddleston, best known for The Big Lebowski, Santa Claus: The Movie and a string of TV roles has died, aged 85.

He died of kidney and lung disease in New Mexico.

Feature film credits include Santa Claus: The Movie and The Big Lebowski in which he played the title roles, plus Blazing Saddles, McQ, The Klansman, Capricorn One, Breakheart Pass and Smokey and the Bandit II, Locker 13, Spot Marks the X, Finnegan Begin Again, Frantic and Life with Mikey.

He had a lengthy CV with TV credits including Adam-12, Then Came Bronson, Gunsmoke, Bewitched, Bonanza, Cannon, McMillan & Wife, The Waltons, The Rookies, Medical Center, Kung Fu, Emergency!, Spencer’s Pilots, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Police Woman, Hawaii Five-O, Walker Texas Ranger, Charlie’s Angels, Sanford and Son, The Practice, The Rockford Files, Tales of the Unexpected, Wave!, The Oregon Trail, Shark Kill, Star Trek: The Next Generation, The West Wing, Jericho, Gilmore Girls, The Practice and The Wonder Years.

His wife told the LA Times that he considered his “crowning achievement” to be the role of Benajmin Franklin in the 1997 Broadway production of “1776.”
