TEN is going out on a limb with a revamp of its Saturday nights.

As previously reported, MacGyver, Scorpion and Hawaii Five-0 will form a new-look line-up from October 8th.

Scorpion will return at 6.30pm with the new MacGyver to debut at 7.30pm and Hawaii Five-O effectively landing an earlier timeslot of 8.30pm.

Pitting new and returning US shows on Saturdays is definitely a shake-up to TEN’s current line-up which has long been challenged by its demographic being out on Saturday nights. Recent shares for the primary channel have sunk as low as 5.5%, matching SBS. Fingers crossed this idea pays off.

MacGyver debuts in the US this Friday.

From a reinvention of the legendary series MacGyver to a squad of geniuses stopping cyber-attacks in Scorpion and cops busting beachside criminals on Hawaii Five-O, these are three series that prove nice guys do not always finish last.

MacGyver was a hero who defined a generation, with the iconic series achieving cult status during its seven-year run (1985 to 1992). Now, one of the world’s most-loved secret agents is back, reinvented and better than ever.

Twenty-something Angus “Mac” MacGyver (Lucas Till, pictured left) is a different kind of hero. He does not use weapons and he is afraid of heights. But under the aegis of Phoenix, MacGyver takes on the responsibility of saving the world, armed with resourcefulness, bubble gum and a paper clip.

From the original series of MacGyver, Golden Globe Award winner Henry Winkler and creator and executive producer Lee Zlotoff return to executive produce this new series, alongside fellow executive producers Peter Lenkov, Michael Clear, Craig S O’Neill and Australian director James Wan (Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring, Furious 7).

The Saturday night action continues with the high-octane drama Scorpion. Inspired by a true story, Scorpion follows eccentric genius Walter O’Brien and his team of brilliant misfits in their fight against complex, high-tech threats.

With a stellar cast that includes Elyes Gabel, Robert Patrick, Katherine McPhee and Eddie Kaye Thomas, Scorpion returns for another round of heart-racing and suspense-filled action.

Also on Saturday nights, crime-fighting unit Hawaii Five-O makes its seventh season debut. Australia’s Alex O’Loughlin returns to lead the all-star cast as Detective Steve McGarrett who works to wipe out crime on Oahu’s sun-drenched beaches.

  1. A chunk of ten’s core demo being “out” hasn’t helped their ratings but the single biggest factor is that they’ve been putting absolute crap on Saturday nights. Content is always king.

As Josh777 says, they’ll need to consider the +7’s because people are unlikely to flock to 10 at short notice.

  2. So glad that they are actually treating Hawaii Five 0 well, usually they are a season behind.

Very happy Scorpion is back on, was wondering when S2 was going too continue.

  3. I’m looking forward to this combination, and really pleased to see Hawaii Five-0 at a much better time slot. The bonus will be as it’s a Saturday night, they wont start late due to reality tv shows! Will be interesting to see if Scorpion does better on a Saturday, instead of the Sunday night.

  4. Re: “They should’ve waited until the footy finals were over. Won’t work.”

Umm, that’s not quite right… The two big Aussie footy finals actually take place the weekend before Ten’s Saturday re-launch: the AFL Grand Final is on Saturday 1st October, while the NRL Grand Final is the following evening, i.e. Sunday 2nd October.

  5. At least the Ten Network are trying to provide alternatives to the incessant reality shows preferred by TV programmers and presumably the advertising gurus. Viewers should encourage this entertainment trend by providing some better ratings though as is usually the case the American audiences ultimately determine what lasts the season or not.

  6. I will definitely be watching, but likely on delay using my PVR. Hopefully TEN focus on the consolidated figures cause although I don’t have a ratings metre, I don’t think I’ll be the only one watching on delay.

  7. Good on Ten for putting fresh content on a Saturday night. MacGyver and Hawaii Five-0 air on Friday nights in the US and do alright, and these shows are unlikely to be timeslot winners with the Sun-Thu competition, so why not?
