AFL finals delivered a huge share to Seven last night, in Melbourne alone pulling 525,000 viewers, the single biggest audience of the night. With only the NRL The Footy Show, and not its southern counterpart, the night also saw Nine fall behind TEN in primary channel share (albeit by 0.1%).

It was The Bachelor that led in entertainment stakes with 818,000 viewers, down from 857,000 last week. Once again the show topped the demos for TEN.

ABC’s Checkout also took  a hit from the footy, with The Code losing more than 100,000 viewers.

Seven News and A Current Affair both won their respective slots.

Seven network trumped the night with 35.1% then Nine 22.0%, TEN 21.5%, ABC 15.3% and SBS 6.0%.

Seven News was #1 with 954,000 / 906,000 for Seven then AFL (676,000 in 2 cities), The Chase (608,000 / 386,000) and Home and Away (587,000 in 4 cities). Selling Houses Australia was 239,000 in 3 cities, and movie: Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason was 176,000 in 3 cities.

Nine News (910,000 / 909,000) led for Nine then A Current Affair (786,000), RBT (641,000) and Hot Seat (531,000).  The Footy Show was 245,000 in 2 cities, and movie: Edge of Tomorrow was 179,000 in 3 cities.

The Bachelor drew 818,000 for TEN. The Project was 594,000 / 415,000, Gogglebox was 570,000. TEN Eyewitness News was 459,000 and SVU was 287,000.

ABC News (684,000), 7:30 (605,000), The Checkout (598,000), The Code (318,000), Pointless and The Tunnel (both 221,000) comprised ABC’s night.

On SBS it was Luke Nguyen’s Street Foot Asia (166,000), Destination Flavour (152,000), World’s Greatest Food Markets (133,000), SBS World News (111,000) and Versailles (106,000).

  1. The Code is officially a dud!
I can see why the ratings are so bad this time – a totally convoluted storyline, and a load of new characters that frankly this viewer has little interest in, especially the Anthony LaPaglia bad guy person.
The ABC of course could always shift The Code to a later timeslot, but what then do they put in its place in the 8.30 timeslot? They’re stuck with it where it is, I guess. They’ve gotta hope that the audience picks up a little in the next few weeks.
The Tunnel at 9.30 is a far better offering than The Code, maybe the ABC could move that to Saturday nights and ditch that awful Agatha Raisin thing.

  2. – Gogglebox made a mistake when talking about the Hot Seat million dollar episode – it was on Monday night last week, they said “on Tuesday night we sat down to…”
    – An extra channel of Seven last night with the AFL not able to be streamed via 7live – in Sydney (where the AFL aired on so-called 7HD and 7mate) the 7mate feed on 7live was different programs including Border Security International. It had no water mark – so I wonder if that was the Seven feed also for AFL states on 7live.

  3. As a Victorian viewer Channel 7 confuse me. Last week after SHA aired they advertised that it would be on next week at 8pm. Failing in their advertising the AFL finals were airing in this slot. Then I find that last night’s episode (which aired in three cities) is available on Plus7. Now I don’t know what episode will air next week in VIC? Plus 7 also claims the next episode is on 8.30pm next Wed when The Durrells is on according to my EPG?? Do 7 even know that they are doing?

    One confused 7 viewer here.

  4. I’ve written about this subject before, but The Code is just too passive in the way it operates. Most of the story is people sitting around explaining stuff to each other, or it’s people sitting around Googling stuff. Either way, it makes for boring drama.

  5. I’m wondering if the drop in figures for The Bachelor was due to the hometown visits – I usually watch it but I find the home visits so dull and repetitive I gave it a miss… Watched Offspring on Netflix instead, waiting for Gogglebox. It again was a fantastic episode, and I found myself getting really emotional when the boys were discussing same sex marriage.

      1. GoggleBox very amusing as usual. The Bach home visits, for me are a bit cringeworthy as the poor bloke has to BS 3 of the families. With only a week or so to go, he knows who he is gonna hook up with and she would also be fairly certain. So the whole thing is just a charade

    1. I suspect it had more to do with the boost from Hamish last week. Hometowns however probably had more content than the previous night with camping. Also to factor in was a longer ep than the previous week.

  6. ABC are in a difficult position. They provide alternate Australian made programming and in terms of eyeballs they can fail because it is niche programming at best. Soul Mates, Please Like Me and now The Code are examples. Where they produce TV that has broader appeal like Doctor Blake and Miss Fisher they win handsomely. But why use public money for more of the same that is already churned out by commercial TV? Or maybe The Code is just too convoluted and not that good and that is the reason it is failing…..
