Residents of Inala in Brisbane have been urged to “dob in” Struggle Street producers filming in their area.

The SBS series was denied filming permits by Brisbane City Council some time ago, but can still film on private property with resident consent. But lack of a permit makes life difficult very for working crews and would severely inhibit locations featured.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk warned any unapproved filming would be investigated.

“The people of Inala are good people, proud people and aspirational people,” he said.

“While Inala is not the wealthiest suburb, it is a growing suburb that has experienced substantial improvement in recent years.”

Queensland Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, recently voiced her objections -some reports indicate to SBS ‘managing director’, others suggest KEO Films producer.

“I made very clear to him that I do not want the people of Queensland, let alone the people in Inala, made fun of on national TV,” she said.

“He assured me it was going to be a different program, to which I said to him ‘Why are you still calling it Struggle Street?’

“We do not need a film crew in here cherry picking what they think would be entertainment value for the rest of Australia.”

Marshall Heald has previously said in a statement “Struggle Street will seek to raise awareness and deepen our understanding of those of us in the community facing social and economic hardship through an honest reflection of what its like to be doing it tough in Australia today.”

The series is also filming in Victoria, reportedly in Sunshine.
