Channel Seven has apologised to boxer Danny Green after a Seven News report incorrectly suggested he referred to rival Anthony Mundine as a “terrorist.”

Captioning software has been blamed for incorrectly attributing his remarks.

“He was saying some things and I was saying some things — he said all this stuff and I said ‘Yeah no worries, you’re scaring me — I’m terrified,'” Green has said on Facebook.

“It’s something I’m really unhappy about. I contacted the heads of the Seven Network and they immediately took action and rectified it.

“I’m really upset about it. I have a lot of mates in the Muslim community (and) I spoke to a couple of them today and they were very surprised.

“They never thought I’d say something like that — which I completely didn’t, and would never. “I’m not like that, I’ve not been raised that way. My eyes are well and truly wide open to the world.”

Seven issued an apology on air and on Yahoo:

In our initial video reporting of this story, captioning software changed Danny Green’s remark “terrified” to “terrorist” and may have conveyed the impression the Danny was calling Anthony Mundine that.

It was not intended and Seven apologises to Danny Green who we accept was trying to be sarcastic about the upcoming bout and not use the word stated in the caption.

  1. Is that what that was all about? I saw Jim Wilson on Seven News saying some incomprehensible gobbledigook to the newsreader at the end of the sports segment mentioning something about Green, Mundine and captioning without saying specifically what it was all about. Sounds more like a publicity stunt to try and generate interest in this silly fight when most commentators are advising the public not to waste their money seeing.

  2. It wasn’t caused by “someone”. “Captioning software has been blamed for incorrectly attributing his remarks”. From someone who uses CC all of the time this sort of thing happens all day, every day.

    1. Captioning software must be related to my Spellcheck software. Every time I type ‘website’ it wants to change it to something else. And don’t even get me started on that ‘predictive’ crap on mobile phones!
