Kriv Stenders to direct ABC doco on The Go-Betweens
First film to be commissioned under the Screen NSW – ABC TV Arts Documentary Feature Fund profiles The Go-Betweens.

Kriv Stenders (Red Dog, The Principal) has created and will direct Right Here: The Go-Betweens, looking at the rise and fall of the band behind such tracks as “Streets of Your Town,” “Was There Anything I Could Do?” and “Cattle and Cane.”
It is first film to be commissioned under the Screen NSW – ABC TV Arts Documentary Feature Fund and will premiere at the 2017 Sydney Film Festival, prior to ABC.
Kriv Stenders has directed several music videos for The Go-Betweens.
“This is very much a dream project for me, as The Go-Betweens and their music have been a fundamental part of my life since I was 15 years old. To be able to tell and share their epic story and to have original members onboard with me is a thrill beyond definition,” he said.
Robert Forster said: “Kriv Stenders is an artist in film and I am sure he will tell the story of The Go-Betweens with flair and precision.”
Band member Lindy Morrison said: “It’s a story that’s never really been told. I am as excited as any Go-Betweens enthusiast to see the tales that may unfold in this chronicle of our years together.”
Band member Amanda Brown added: “The Go-Betweens – we were the unruly child of art, love and the ties that bind.”
The film will be produced by Joe Weatherstone, with Chris Hilton and David Alrich as executive producers for Essential Media and Entertainment.
The Screen NSW – ABC TV Arts Documentary Feature Fund (DFF) is a new three-year joint initiative to fund one new feature length arts documentary each year. The three films will have their world premiere each year at the Sydney Film Festival prior to screening on ABC TV.
Screen Australia is the major investor in the film through its documentary program.
Sydney Film Festival Director Nashen Moodley said: “We’re delighted to partner with Screen NSW and ABC TV Arts to launch a brand-new Australian documentary focusing on the arts at the Sydney Film Festival. The world premiere of this film about an extraordinary band will undoubtedly be a highlight of our annual June Festival.”

The Go-Betweens was the band that was always going to make it but never did. They had a high profile, the ABC played their videos on Rock Arena and Triple J, people loved their songs and went to their concerts but they didn’t buy their records. Incredibly they never had a hit record and in the music industry that is the barometer of success. They sang the song Streets of Your Town which Prime7 used as their theme in the 1990s. A Current Affair used that song in one of their stories a few years ago and a few inquiries on Google and Facebook revealed who it was. I found it on Spotify as well as a few other songs which I listen to at the gym, so I hope they are receiving some of the royalties they were denied when they were performing.
It’ll be Amanda and Lindy against Robert and the three of them against Robert Vickers (the bass player) who’ll say he and Amanda were the only real ‘musicians’ in the band. Then there’s all the record companies that dropped them after one album… It should be the Bob and Carol, Ted and Alice of band documentaries.
