The NSW Office of the Children’s Guardian has stepped up protections children and young people working in the film, television, entertainment, still photography and modelling industries.

Guardian officers will be empowered to inspect sets where they suspect a person is in breach of child employment laws, issue penalty notices, and apply for a Supreme Court order.

NSW Children’s Guardian Kerryn Boland said she was often shocked at what children in the entertainment industry were being asked to do.

“Children … make an important contribution to the creative arts and in turn they benefit. While most employers are absolutely child-focused, it does beggar belief what some people want to ask kids to do,” she said.

  1. I worked on a short film this year which had two teeangers in it, child services was throwing us through hoops for the most tiny of things.

So there’s a part with a goat (yes a real goat), at first they said that the goat wouldn’t be allowed anywhere near the girls as it might be dangerous. A goat is not a dangerous or savage animal and a 13 year old is not a tiny child who is going to get attacked like a 4 year old might from a dog. In the end we were able to figure it out, but I hear just they get so pedantic over the tiny things that people might not want to give them the full story as they lack reality.

This is Victoria, hopefully they have more sense in NSW.
