SBS on Demand update

From late November, SBS On Demand will require a login

2016-11-14_0159

From late November, visitors to SBS On Demand will be required to log in on desktop, with login on other devices to follow.

SBS claims the login will enable users to curate their streaming journey “by adding their best-loved shows to their favourites list; search programs by language, country, or category; and resume playback from where they left off across multiple devices.”

Along with its changes to multichannels, SBS has been ramping up the binge dramas on its online platform with Midnight Sun from December 1st, Brazil’s Magnifica 70 from Sunday 27 November, Belgian crime thriller Public Enemy from Thursday 15 December and Scandinavian revenge drama Black Widows from Thursday 15 December.

SBS will also launch a new version of its Android app, with Chromecast capabilities.

  1. Forcing logins is frankly is very anti-consumer of them. There’s no need for it, people can already login if they wish to access those extra features (I am logged in on my Xbox One app for example) and I cannot see how logging in could prevent things like piracy or adblockers.

The only thing I can think of is that they’re after juicy user and demographic information.

    1. SBS would know how many are using the service without logins. As they’re running the servers, hosting the videos, they would know precisely how many people are currently streaming videos at any specific time on a specific video or just service wide.
As it’s their service, naturally they have access to all the back-end data and stats you and I wouldn’t be able to tell just looking at the website or app.

  2. This is annoying news I recently bet after using the On Demand App cause thats the wayntheynhave set it up so was willing to download it sofar it has been good! However this latest change &nhunger for data gives me the shits! They might aswell offer a subscription service atleast that way we don’t have toput up with ads!

  3. Not happy about compulsory login. Should be option only so that those who wish to “curate their streaming journey” can do so, and those who just wish to jump in and watch something can do that without having their journey tracked.

With SBS2 going and now this I can’t but help feel that I will be spending a lot less time watching SBS next year.
