The Book Club is back next week for a one hour special to wrap up the year.

Host Jennifer Byrne and regulars Marieke Hardy and Jason Steger are joined by fantasy author C.S. Pacat and Wheeler Centre director Michael Williams to celebrate and discuss some of 2016’s best books.

Paul Kelly and Charlie Owen will also perform a Leonard Cohen song.

ABC is yet to announce its plans for The Book Club in 2017.

Everyone loves a book recommendation and as the year winds up those ‘best of 2016’ lists start being compiled. The five extremely well-read panellists have been asked to nominate their top books of 2016 – whether that be fiction, non-fiction, memoir or even a colouring-in book.

Jennifer’s choice is Working Class Boy by Jimmy Barnes; Jason has picked the Australian debut from Zoe Morrison, Music and Freedom; Marieke is treading her own path picking a classic. And we let her, because it’s such a good pick! C.S. Pacat is bringing along Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling; and Michael is rounding out the list with the Man Booker Prize-winner by Paul Beatty, The Sellout.

Throughout the show, discover what other enthusiastic readers – children and booksellers – chose as their top books of 2016. There’s The Book Club website poll result for the audience’s favourite new release book in 2016. And the show will culminate with a Paul Kelly and Charlie Owen live studio performance of Bird on a Wire by Leonard Cohen.

9.30pm Tuesday 13 December on ABC.
