Season 4 of Masters of Sex, currently screening on Stan, will be the last.

Masters of Sex was a beautifully written and acted exploration of America’s changing sexual mores,” Showtime said in a statement. “We are incredibly proud to have shared the story of Masters and Johnson for four critically acclaimed seasons. The series will remain available across our platforms where new viewers can discover it for years to come.”

According to the Hollywood Reporter, producers and cast decided they have told a complete story and opted to not move forward with a fifth season.

The period drama starring Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan averaged less than 800,000 total US viewers, less than half of the 2 million viewers its lead in, Ray Donovan.

It has screened in Australia on SBS and Stan.

  1. The original voyeuristic titillation diminished with familiarity after season 2, but realistically it’s fair to say that a reasonable percentage of viewers watching Masters of Sex were not tuning in for the well written stories.

  2. Bit of a shame….but I thought Season 3 was ordinary compared to the first two seasons.

Presently watching Season 4 on Stan and it is an improvement (so far) on Season 3.

Will be interesting if Season 4 wraps up the story or not….but if it was a late decision to axe it, I assume things will be left unresolved.
