Tony Jones returns to host Sunday Footy Show

The exit of James Brayshaw ricochets around as sports presenter returns to a show he hosted from 2006 to 2008.

Nine News sports presenter Tony Jones is returning to host the AFL Sunday Footy Show for the network following Craig Hutchison’s permanent move as The Footy Show co-host.

The shuffle follows the departure of James Brayshaw following the breakdown of contract negotiations.

Jones produced the show from 2002 to 2006 and hosted from 2006 to 2008.

“Having produced and hosted the show in the past, I have always had a fondness for it. It’s going to be great to rekindle the passion,” Jones said.

Nine Melbourne Managing Director, Ian Paterson, said, “We are all very excited to have TJ back in the hosting seat on Sunday mornings.

“It’s a homecoming for Tony because of his history with the show, having hosted it and produced it in the past. TJ’s in-depth AFL knowledge and exemplary hosting skills are perfect for The Sunday Footy Show.”

This year Jones chalked up his 30th anniversary with Nine.

Jones is one of the most experienced and well-regarded sports journalists in the country, who has covered a host of Australia’s major sporting events. He presented Nine’s Sunday afternoon AFL coverage, which included Sunday Football and Sunday Football Live in 2003, was a member of Nine’s reporting team for the 2006 Melbourne and the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, covered the 2010 Winter Olympics from Vancouver and the 2012 London Olympics.

Jones is a regular guest on the 3AW radio lineup as a fill-in host on the Mornings program when Neil Mitchell is on leave. He is currently presenting Melbourne’s Nine News 6pm bulletin week nights filling in for Peter Hitchener.

In 2017, The Sunday Footy Show will continue to bring viewers all the latest breaking AFL stories, wrap-ups of the weekend games, match previews and the biggest names in the game.
