Martin Clunes: Doc Martin to end in 2018

Star & producer say series 9 in 2018 will wrap TVs grumpiest doctor.

Much-loved UK drama Doc Martin will end with its ninth series in 2018, star Martin Clunes has revealed.

“We start making [series 8] in spring and it’ll probably be on air in the autumn,” he told Radio Times. “So [series 8] is the second to last.”

Produced by Martin’s own Buffalo Productions, the series started in 2004 and seven series, with a total 54 episodes plus a 2006 film, having aired so far.

Actor Ian McNeice who plays café owner Bert Large, recently revealed that the cast feared that series seven was going to be the last because of the lavish nature of the series 7 wrap party.

He said: “At the end of the series we had a wrap party with the best drinks and food ever and we were thinking this is looking pretty – is this a goodbye? We were getting a little nervous. Then we had a cast and crew photograph and we had never had that before, and it was slightly unnerving that the end of this series we wrap things up nicely. But it is not over and we are thrilled.”

Meanwhile Marta Kauffman, co-creator of Friends, has a US adaptation in development.

It airs in Australia on ABC.

  1. Satire soap? I would have liked to see it end with the wedding – the doc is far too painful for anyone to live with. His character was more human in early episodes. I think they backed themselves into a corner with the marriage, because the Doc’s personality could never change enough to make it work.

  2. You know – The Doc is so different to Garry in Men behaving badly – One of my Favourite characters of all time – But he has also grown on me over the run of the series to be up there too. I’ll be sad to see the end of this show even though still have 2 series to look forward to.

    1. My whole approach to life has been heavily influenced by the character of Gary from Men Behaving Badly…..a genuinely superb role model. It is to Martin’s great credit as an actor, that he can be identified by two such contrasting roles plus he’s done doco’s as well. Good luck to him in the future…

  3. Reading between the lines Martin Clunes decided the fate of this show, as a money earner the shows other producers would likely keep the satire soap going as would the main cast it seems. It will be interesting to see what future projects Mr Clunes will be featured in or has it something to do with the American version.
