Oscars announces wrong winner for Best Picture

A controversy has upstaged the 2017 Academy Awards after Faye Dunaway & Warren Beatty presented the wrong winner for Best Picture.

Dunaway incorrectly announced La La Land as the winner, until a producer interrupted speeches to announced Moonlight had won.

Cast and crew of the hit musical had to leave the stage as confused winners of Moonlight took to the stage.

“I opened the envelope and it said Emma Stone, La La Land,” Warren Beatty told the audience.  “That’s why I took such a long look at Faye (Dunaway) and you. I wasn’t trying to be funny.”

After the gaffe, Academy librarians confirmed, “We can’t think of another moment when the wrong winner was announced during the show.”

The mix-up echoes the uproar over Miss Universe announcing the wrong winner.

But it wasn’t the only boo-boo.

During the In Memoriam segment a photo of the late Australian costume designer “Janet Patterson” the broadcast featured Aussie film producer Jan Chapman, who is alive and well.

Because it ran overtime (as live shows do) our recording cut off straight after the Lalaland announcement – my wife told me (watching it an hour later and before I got home) that Lalaland won – confused – having being bombarded with tweets left right and centre on the way home I told her it didn’t…

  3. I think it’s ironic that the SMH have a story reporting about the error with the Janet Patterson image.
    Yet they have a memorial video from November last year on their website using the exact same photo.

  6. And how many people had already either switched of their TV, changed channels or left the room, like me, during the acceptance speeches of the LaLa Land crowd??? I only came back into the TV room to hear what all the commotion was about.

  10. Faye Dunaway actually announced it. Beatty opened the envelope and just paused (probably because it said Emma Stone for “La La Land”). But Dunaway grabbed the envelope from him and said “La La Land”.

    2. A seniors’ moment of confusion led to the biggest stuff up in Oscars history. Maybe they should have printed the name of the category in larger font on the front of the envelope for starters.
