Airdate: Surgery Ship

The Africa Mercy is a floating hospital with Australian doctors & nurses giving free life-saving surgery and medical treatment.

In April Nat Geo People premieres a new documentary series Surgery Ship which follows the Australian doctors and nurses on board the hospital ship ‘Africa Mercy.’

Docked in Benin, West Africa the ship provides free life-saving surgery and medical treatment to thousands of people in need.

The ship has previously featured on Sunday Night and on SBS documentary, also titled Surgery Ship.

The series for Nat Geo People is produced by Media Stockade which produced the original SBS doco.

More than 70% of the world’s population are unable to access essential surgery, as a result many treatable illnesses become life-threatening. For so many people the surgery ship is their only hope, they have no other way of getting the vital medical care they need. From the producers of the award-winning documentary of the same name, this eight-part series returns to The Surgery Ship to take a more in-depth look at the inspiring stories of the volunteer doctors and nurses making life and death decisions every day, as well as the patients whose lives are transformed.

7.30pm Tuesday April 18 on Nat Geo People.
