Logie Awards 2017: nominees

Jessica Marais, Grant Denyer, Peter Helliar, Waleed Aly, Rodger Corser & Samuel Johnson in the race for Gold.

Just one female, Jessica Marais, is nominated for the Gold Logie award this year.

The Love Child / Wrong Girl star has to fend off competition from Grant Denyer, Peter Helliar, Waleed Aly, Rodger Corser and Samuel Johnson for this year’s Gold.

The Project‘s push for Peter Helliar to be nominated for Gold have paid off, but it has come at the expense of Carrie Bickmore -out of contention for the top gong. She is still in the running for Silver as Best Presenter.

But the Gold is less diverse this year than 2016, when a campaign for Lee Lin Chin netted a Gold nomination.

Best Drama is a fight between 800 Words, Doctor Doctor, Home And Away, Molly, Offspring and Wentworth. But in the jury voted Most Outstanding Drama it is down to A Place To Call Home, Cleverman, Rake, The Code and Wentworth.

ABC leads with the most nominations, while TEN leads in the “viewer voted” categories.

The 2017 Logie Awards will be held at Crown on Sunday April 23 and screen on Nine.

  1. The only things I really care about on this list are that Australian Survivor wins best reality, Gogglebox best factual, and it would be nice to see Peter Helliar win the gold. I am a fan of his comedy

    1. Yes, I would like to see Pete Heliar win too, he is no less deserving than any of the previous winners in the last decade. Having followed Logies since 1978, I have lost faith in the process; particularly since electronic voting and multi platform social media campaigns. No-one is ever happy with the Logies; so I just go with the flow. The fact that we have not had successive wins by anyone for years, or even multiple wins is probably fairer than those years where Ray Martin and Lisa McCune cleaned up year after year. Pete is for me always a welcome presence when i tune in to the project (as are Tommy and Lehmo). Pete brings such a lovely mix of humour and at times seriousness on issues. Odd that Carrie not there this year. The Logies are always unpredictable.

    2. Please, never mention Peter Helliar and comedy in the same sentance. If your looking for someone to do bum and d*** jokes at the local high school then he’s you man. But a comedian on a national tv show………. forget it.

  2. im surprised that Here Come The Habibs which was a rating hit for 9 did not get any nominations- that show was funny.
    i hope Today wins.
i think what happened at the oscars with the ‘wrong film’ winning best film- something like that will happen here at logies.
Happy WentWorth is nominated for best drama but shocked that pamela rabe didnt get a nomination- she is brilliant as ‘The Freak’

  3. Anyone find it a bit odd that every nominee for best presenter is from Channel 10?

Obviously their PR department bought extra copies of TV Week this year.

Still don’t understand how The Project has two presenters nominated when it often comes 4th in it’s time slot.

  4. Jessica is well deserved. I don’t understand how a rubbish show like Offspring is still nominated also Asher Keddie. Too overrated. I guess it is Rating Vs. quality

      1. I disagree. The acting is extreme. Do you know anyone in real life talking like that at this age? around 40 and all these extreme facial expressions, too annoying. This show run its course years ago. The beginning was really good, but the magic gone.

        1. From its first ep it pitched as a dramedy, and its often stylised and heightened performances was its point of difference. The writing may have softened over the later seasons, but the ensemble cast and performances I still find most enjoyable and affecting.

  5. I don’t watch Logies but I hope that Jessica Marais gets gold. Did a fantastic role in TWG & Love Child.
On the other side, Olympics 2016 should pick up for best sports coverage along with In Rio Today.

  6. Some good noms, surprised Love Child didn’t get a best drama nomination. While I like Home & away, Love Child is way more deserving than it is.

  7. Lisa Wilkinson should’ve been nominated for Gold Logie and Best Presenter.
my picks for Gold are; Grant Denyer, Rodger Corser or Jessica Marais

  8. A Place To Call Home was at its peak in season 2 with its daring storyline about James’ conversion therapy. but it barely got a mention in logie noms. moves to foxtel, where it never quite hit the same mark and it finally gets attention. Have standards dropped across the board or is something else going on?

Gold is a 2 horse race between sam & pete. best reality was Survivor for sure and hopefully Plase Like Me takes home at least 2 awards.

doesn’t seem fair that Upper Middle Bogan can be in both entertainment and comedy categories. especially as ‘entertainment’ is a very broad reaching category as is, including reality shows like The Voice as well.

what are the tips for HoF? Denise, Kerri-anne or Dr. Harry?

  9. Pamela Rabe ripped off again, should be Best Actress and Gold logie nominated.
Her performance as ‘The Freak’ has been brilliant, especially in the scene where she killed Bea.

  10. Best Lifestyle Program – Luke Warm Sex – LOL – can someone please get a quote from Luke McGregor about this
Hardest category to pick a winner – Most Outstanding Supporting Actor – all were superb

  11. Firstly a big shout out to Studio Ten and Sarah Harris getting a nom. It’s always been a fan of mine providing some genuinely funny live tv moments. Second in regards to the Gold I’m not sure about Samuel Johnson being nominated for just one bit of acting. Sure his performance was pretty flawless definitely should be best actor but his only performance on tv was over 12 months ago anyone else think so or just me… I must admit I’ve always had a slight issue with actors being nom for gold….

    1. Samuel Johnson has an extensive career with many quality shows and performances. I prefer someone like that to be nominated that some young one-role actor who happens to be the flavour-of-the-month. Gold logie should be reserved for actors with long, versatile careers. One of the reasons I would love to see Craig McLachlan recognised, purely because he has played hugely diverse characters simultaneously over the past few years.

  12. Peter Hilliard & Grant Denver up for Gold, Isti Aussie TV that bad? Where is Lisa Wilkinson for Gold or Best Presenter? Even Karl couldn’t get a mention at least Sunrise missed out again. Justice. Gogglebox factual? Your dreaming. Don’t tell me they don’t edit that to the nth degree or that the cast isn’t aware that they must produce ‘gold’ to stay on the show.

    1. It is a factual documentary of entertaining families watching TV. while a new take on the premise, it is exactly those two things. It is not scripted or new age reality by any means.

  13. It would be interesting to see if the nominations would be different if the networks weren’t allowed to run campaigns. It seems like people just vote for who the networks tell us to vote for. Peter Helliar getting a gold nomination just because he is the only Project host who hasn’t won one is an absolute farce in my opinion. He didn’t even get nominated in the Best Presenter category.

    1. You do know Charlie Pickering never got a nomination either right? Speaking of this tho I remember Tracey Grimshaw making a light hearted remark about it being rigged if Peter Helliar wins this year.. stranger things…

  14. Not unusual for me to find the industry nominated awards far more balanced than the public ones. Debra Lawrence should romp it in for her nuanced and heartfelt performance.
Just a pity that Pamela Rabe has been overlooked again.

    1. My sentiments exactly. Pamela Rabe should have won last year, but deserved another nomination this year; if not the prize. An astonishing performance. It would be great for Debra Lawrence to finally win a Logie. I don’t think she has one.

  15. Don’t watch the Logies personally but hope Sam Johnson gets the Gold, Please Like Me Most Outstanding and Debra Lawrence Best supporting Actress. Very deserving shows/actors.

Interesting to see only one female up for Gold but a few new faces is always good. I remember when Lisa McCune was up several years in a row.
