Sophie Monk named as next Bachelorette

Former Australia's Got Talent judge is a surprise announcement as TEN's next Bachelorette.

Singer, radio presenter and Reality TV face Sophie Monk has been surprisingly announced as TEN’s next Bachelorette.

The former Australia’s Got Talent judge, 37, has previously been linked to a number of profile men.

“My Mum was the person who suggested that I should be The Bachelorette. She, along with the rest of my family, know how much it means to me to find the right person to settle down with.

“I moved back to Australia a couple of years ago and I’ve embraced life back in the suburbs on the Gold Coast. I love having my parents and family nearby, and spending time with my niece and nephews, but I’m missing that one person to share it with.”

TEN Chief Content Officer, Beverley McGarvey, said: “The Bachelorette Australia is a love story and a fairy tale.

“Australia has known and loved Sophie for more than 15 years and has followed the ups and downs of her love life.

“We are delighted she has agreed to join The Bachelorette Australia and let the nation enjoy her search to find happily ever after,” she said.

Casting a known personality is a first for TEN, which may bring a following but also comes with perceptions about its lead star which may work against it.

Monk, who rose to fame in Popstars said, “I’m in the public eye, but away from that I’m just a regular woman and I’m open to committing fully to finding love on The Bachelorette Australia. After life experience with some of the wrong men, what I want to find above all else is a man who is kind and genuine.”

Hosted by Osher Günsberg and produced by Warner Bros International Television Production Australia it will air later this year.

  1. The only reason I’ve ever watched any of The Bachelor franchise is because of Rosie Waterland’s recaps. I’ll be actually watch this season now even though Rosie is no longer doing her recaps because of Sophie – good casting IMO! She’s a hoot, genuine and fearless.

  2. I love Sophie Monk and The Bachelor franchise as a whole, but this stunt casting to try and lift the disappointing ratings of The Bachelorette last year kind of tarnishes the brand imo.

I probably would have preferred this as another add on to the current set up a kind of celebrity bachelor series.

Sophie is engaging warm and easy to watch I just hope it doesnt make the series a complete joke and easy fodder for all the nay sayers…

  3. Looks like this could be a trend. A journo and now a Broadcaster with a music career history. I predict there will be another semi famous media identity that will be the next Bachelor or Bachelorette. I am cynical about these shows and there track record at finding “love” the real success will come after the show, post last seasons Bachelor I gave Richie and Alex 2 years before they go splitsville. Usually you would get to know these strangers for a lot longer than just three or six months depending on the length of production and broadcast. IMO it doesn’t matter how you meet. if your not serious and committed through good and bad it will not last. Post Honeymoon phase is when the real work kicks in.

  4. T E N That’s Entertainment! I initially thought this was one of the very late April fool jokes, but apparently its real. Usually I am very cynical about these shows from both sides. But I think this could be one of those rare times that the main contestant is genuine, because Sophie already has a career in media and doesn’t need to look for another one which usually isn’t the case with these shows. the Irony both Sophie and Osher aka Andrew G both got their fame on Music reality shows. TEN need this years Bachelorette and Bachelor as well as MasterChef to work tremendously well if they are the stave off the hounds at their front door. but even if they do it will only buy them time.

  5. I think she’s an excellent choice for two reasons. Firstly she has an engaging personality and will be fun to watch. Secondly I think she’s the perfect age for the show. At her age you can feel confident that she is genuine in wanting to meet Mr Right. Too many contestants on these shows are just too young and aren’t all that serious. It seems to be more of a beauty contest than trying to find a perfect match.

I think someone like Sophie will do her best to get to know the contestants as early as possible to try and find a group of guys that she genuinely feels some compatability with and not just whittle them down to the 6 hottest guys and then try and work out who she might be compatible with.

  6. This isn’t a surprise. About 3 episodes ago on The Weekly’s Hard Chat, when asked what reality show she would like to be on, Monk said “Bachelorette – I’m very single”.

  7. Love her or hate her I think people will watch and the ratings will be very very good. I really liked her in Celebrity Apprentice so hope she does well.
