AFTRS films coming to iview

iview will screen films by past & present AFTRS students. Plus: Russel Howcroft appointment.

ABC and the Australian Film Television & Radio School are partnering to feature work from students past and present on iview, starting with a Jane Campion film, Peel (pictured).

“We are thrilled to partner with the ABC to launch this content partnership on iview. We hope it will become a must-see destination for lovers of Australian film. It’s a great avenue for AFTRS to showcase our students’ work, and for us to curate classic early films and interviews from AFTRS alumni who have gone on to recognition as some of Australia’s foremost filmmakers,” said Neil Peplow, CEO of AFTRS.

David Anderson, Director of Television, ABC said, “As the independent source of Australian conversations, culture and stories, the ABC is delighted to be partnering with AFTRS to bring this unique content to iview. These remarkable archival films and rare interviews promise to be an exciting addition to iview and we look forward to the opportunity to provide a platform for students to showcase their films.”

Meanwhile in further news Russel Howcroft has been appointed Chair of the AFTRS Board, replacing  Julianne Schultz, who was appointed in 2012.

The first program coincides with the 70th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival where AFTRS alumni have had considerable success over the past four decades, including acclaimed writer/director Jane Campion who this year has been invited back to the Festival to screen her 1986 Palme d’Or winning short Peel and her new series Top of the Lake: China Girl.

Peel, made while Jane was an AFTRS student, will lead the program which will also include five other films from alumni who have gone on to have their work screened at Cannes – Gillian Armstrong (One Hundred A Day), Ivan Sen (Warm Strangers), Shirley Barrett (Cherith), Sue Brooks (The Drover’s Wife) and Cate Shortland (Joy).

A new season of films will be released regularly and will also include never before seen footage of AFTRS alumni in their student days, including rare interviews.
