American Idol picked up by ABC (US)

It's official. Idol gets the green light to return, but jumps from FOX to ABC.

That was fast.

American Idol is officially returning to US television but jumping from FOX to ABC, after ending its run in 2016.

Details are scarce at this point with the network due to present to advertisers at its Upfronts next week.

American Idol is a pop-culture staple that left the air too soon,” said Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment. “ABC is the right home to reignite the fan base. We are thrilled viewers will once again share in these inspiring stories of people realizing their dreams.”

ABC has spent years looking for its own answer to Idol but Rising Star and Duets, failed to fire. Idol is now expected to join Dancing with the Stars and The Bachelor franchise in ABC’s regular season.

Cecile Frot-Coutaz, CEO of FremantleMedia Group, said, ”ABC’s passion and enthusiasm make them a perfect home for American Idol. We are excited to be partnering with them to discover the next generation of talented artists. It’s an irresistible combination that means now is the ideal time to welcome back one of the most successful shows in the history of contemporary television.”

According to Hollywood Reporter, host Ryan Seacrest, seemingly has a full plate but has been vocal about his affection for the show, and famously ended the 2016 finale with a cryptic “goodbye for now.”

Under ABC an Australian broadcaster is not yet confirmed. It last screened on FOX8.
