Katy Perry signs as American Idol judge

New-look American Idol nabs a very big name.

Katy Perry is joining the new-look American Idol at ABC (US).

“I am honored and thrilled to be the first judge bringing back the American Idol tradition of making dreams come true for incredible talents with authentic personalities and real stories,” said Perry.

“I’m always listening to new music, and love discovering diamonds in the rough – from mentoring young artists on my label, or highlighting new artists on my tours, I want to bring it back to the music.”

Perry is the #1 most-followed person on Twitter with 98 million followers, ahead of Justin Bieber (94m), Barack Obama (88m) and Taylor Swift (83m). Donald Trump has 29m by comparison. She was previously a guest judge during Season 9 as a temporary replacement for Paula Abdul.

Perry is the first onscreen talent to join the competition-series revival. Rumours of Kelly Clarkson joining were thwarted when she signed to The Voice at NBC. Other names in speculation include Idol discoveries Carrie Underwood and Adam Lambert.

Ryan Seacrest is also in advanced talks to return as host, but has a busy schedule and a deal has yet been finalised.

  1. I might watch an episode or two just for Katy Perry. However the Idol format seems very dated compared to The Voice. I read somewhere Chris Daughtry has already signed on as a judge

    1. American Idol isn’t just about the voice (that’s left for another show…), it’s about the entire package – which Katy certainly is.

  2. I guess it is no longer a stigma for artists (especially the current and relevant ones) to sign up for reality shows. Artists don’t make as much money from music sales alone like it used to be.

    1. i dont think we need to feel sorry for Katy Perry…. im sure she has a decent sum of money in the bank…. She isnt doing idol for the money… Its all about exposure. She will have an album to sell and singles to sing. Its strategic not so much financial.
Good on her tho i think she will do well on the judges table.
But im not so sure the show needs to be revived so soon
