Rebel Wilson case drawing international headlines

BBC, FOX News, NBC, NY Daily News, Perez Hilton all reporting showbiz trial in Melbourne.

Rebel Wilson’s defamation trial against Bauer Media has been attracting international headlines.

It has been reported in the US, New Zealand, Ireland, England, and Qatar including BBC, FOX News, NBC, NY Daily News, Perez Hilton.

Yesterday Wilson told the court she was let go from Kung Fu Panda 3 following Bauer Media articles in May 2015.

“[DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg] said very bluntly to my face ‘Unfortunately you’re just now too divisive to be in this movie; it’s a family movie.’ I was devastated. I’d never been fired from a job before in my life,” she said.

“I knew the director and producers loved me and the work I was putting into the film. I ran – well, I don’t really run – I walked quickly out of the building, got to my car, and just burst into tears.”

Wilson says she was also cut from the Trolls movie, asserting it was for the same reason.

“This magazine company gets away with so much, and not everyone has the strength to stand up for themselves, but I do,” she said.

“You’re not popular forever in Hollywood, you have a few years until you go out of fashion. They took those two years away from me.”

Earlier she said she had not lied about being related to Walt Disney, telling the court her grandmother told her the children’s animation pioneer married her relative Lillian. She recently visited the theme park with friend and actor Hugh Sheridan.

But in a separate claim Bauer journalist Elizabeth Wilson is suing Rebel Wilson after Rebel took aim at her on social media. In a case of mistaken identity Rebel Wilson targeted one of two journalists named Elizabeth Wilson, but only one of whom had written about her grandmother.

“The odds of there being two women with the same name who worked at the same company – it never crossed my mind,” she told the court.

This week Wilson told the court she had only had 2 jobs since the Bauer articles.

IMDb lists her upcoming projects as Isn’t It Romantic for New Line, a new version of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Anne Hathaway known as Nasty Women for MGM, Pitch Perfect 3 for Universal,

  1. I think Rebel’s career stalled because she can only play one character & it was just getting pretty stale. You only had to realise how long she had been on TV in Australia to realise that she couldn’t possibly be 29.
Someone really does need to stop these atrocious magazines from printing whatever they like.

  2. I am so fed up with hearing about Rebel Wilson! Sure, I think the magazine has done the wrong thing, and I’m very happy to see someone strong enough to stand up to them!…

  3. Go rebel! I’m surprised they haven’t been sued before. How many times have Bec and Leighton broken up or Jen Aniston been pregnant. It’s annoying and I’m happy someone is standing up to them. She better win this.

    1. I would have to disagree with you. Rebel may have a few haters like any star, but she has received universal praise from many for her roles in movies, especially Bridesmaids and the Pitch Perfect films.

  4. Very pleased Rebel is taking action. Sensationalism sells papers & magazines without integrity, accountability, repercussions or thought to the harm that can be done to the individual. All in the interest of a dollar, and not always the facts. How many times has Fifi Box been pregnant in the last 12 months, and where are retractions if wrong.
It’s a shame the writer can’t always put themselves in their subjects shoes and think about how they would like to be treated.
I saw Julia Morris stand up last night and she mentioned magazine cover of her & kids & husband at a water park with closeup pictures, lucky she is strong enough (or is she?) to not be affected and made fun of herself, we all have feelings.
David, not suggesting you fall into this bucket, but it must be very hard at times to know when something is newsworthy, versus verging on intruding into personal life.
