Report: Seven keen for A-League rights

Seven hoping to nab broadcast rights for live Saturday A-League match.

Seven is reportedly keen to obtain the free-to-air rights to broadcast the Saturday A-League match Live, likely on one of its multichannels.

Fairfax reports Seven is set to return to the negotiating table to challenge ABC and FOX Sports for the last remaining portion of the TV deal.

Sources suggest the FFA rebuked Seven’s original proposal which offered little cash in exchange for significant promotion of the competition.

Should the FFA fail to sell the rights directly to a FTA network, FOX Sports will obtain the rights entirely an on-sell a Free to Air component -likely to go to TEN.

Seven management attended the A-League grand final between Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory on May 7.

  1. I long for the day A league is on FTA tV .sbs coverage is woeful and putting it on some obscure second or third channel no in can ever find .hope seven gets the rights

    1. Sometimes on the main channel depending on your state.

How hard is it to press “32” (or “up-channel” twice from 30) on your remote? People don’t seem to have trouble finding Go or Mate.

It won’t be on the main channel if Seven do secure the rights so what’s the difference? At least on SBS you know that it’s not going to be bumped for AFL or tennis.

  2. A League (and W League) must, must have FTA games to survive. SBS, while trumpeting their focus on the world and therefore a world sport, have shafted both competitions. Seven will need to fight Fox Sports for a decent deal or else it won’t be worth doing.

      1. Agree. Don’t think we can fault SBS’s commitment. The matches have been live, decent pre-match discussion and post-match analysis. I’m sure that they would have liked to show more matches but they don’t have the $.

        1. And this new deal is for the same as what SBS had (one match a gameweek), just Sat night instead of Fri night. I don’t understand the hate and vitriol towards SBS personally, did a sterling job. Would be great if they could continue given Viceland is HD now.

      2. Most of the “shafting” was on the W League – thankfully the ABC took it back and have done a great job. But one game televised per week of A League, delayed finals (not live) is not enough to build the fanbase. But, fair enough, these were the result of letting Foxtel have too much power – not much SBS could do. And I have to admit that the team doing the actual games are good.

  3. I always thought there was no profit in soccer given the lack of stoppages and thus time for ads. Where does Seven put ads during the exhibition matches it broadcasts?
