Rumour: Foxtel Play to add HD, Chromecast?

Viewer-friendly updates look set to be coming to Foxtel Play.

Foxtel looks set to make announcements surrounding Foxtel Play on June the 6th, with both HD quality and Chromecast support tipped to be included.

Tech site EFTM claims the new customer Terms and Conditions for the service “effective 7 June 2017” refer to two significant changes:

“Except for a Chromecast stream, you can only use a Registered Device to access the Foxtel Play Service via its own downloaded and installed Foxtel Play Services Application.

“In addition, there may be some technical limitations for customers who chose to access the Foxtel Play Service via older Devices. These limitations include the inability to use trick play functionality (such as pause, rewind, fast forward etc) on streamed programs and the unavailability of HD on all Devices”

Foxtel recently announced the removal of 19 channels from Foxtel Play, which itself has been rumoured for a name change, possibly to Foxtel Now.

Last week Freeview confirmed it had added Chromecast features.

  1. Commercially it looks like Foxtel is trying to cover itself for the device applications market but more likely it is looking towards the future which excludes set top box fees and long term contracts, consumers want services that can be cancelled whenever they choose so they can vary their viewing content. The convenient cheaper services will likely be the most chosen by consumers which will not bode well for Foxtel relying as it does on sports for it’s main subscribers.

  2. They need Chromecast for Foxtel Go. Now I know that want people to still pay for multiple rooms, but it’d be nice to have a catch up service that means I can watch it on my TV. I don’t have a network cable plugged into my box.

  3. Foxtel play needs to be completely rewritten so it is browser based instead of the need to install an app. While Presto had Chromecast support it never worked properly. DirectTV now a US based similar products is all browser based with Chromecast support. The ridiculous device limitations need tp go.

  4. Considering Presto had Chromecast support, it wasn’t a good sign that the replacement Foxtel Play service didn’t have Chromecast, so better now than never that they’re adding it back!
