British character actor, best known for Catweazle, has died.

British character actor, Geoffrey Bayldon, best known for Catweazle, has died aged 93.

Bayldon played the title role in Catweazle for two seasons from 1970 -1971, as a kooky 11th century wizard who is transported to modern day and befriends a young boy.

The series was broadcast in multiple territories including Australia on ABC.

His popularity in the role would subsequently land him the part of the sinister Crowman in the children’s sitcom Worzel Gummidge alongside Jon Pertwee. It ran from 1979 – 1981.

After Gummidge ended Bayldon remained a TV regular, appearing in Casualty as five different characters over the course of two decades, and guest starring on series including Wycliffe, Last of the Summer Wine, New Tricks and Waking the Dead.

He twice turned down the chance to star in Doctor Who.

His final role was in a 2010 episode of UK sitcom My Family.
