Origin thunders home with 2.35m viewers

The Blues win over the Maroons becomes the biggest audience of the ratings year so far.

State of Origin has drawn the biggest numbers of the 2017 ratings year at a whopping 2.35m viewers.

The Blues win over the Maroons was biggest in Sydney with 989,000 viewers followed by Brisbane’s 808,000 and Melbourne’s 319,000. But it was hard to top 2016’s first match which rewrote the records at 2.7m viewers.

Nine stormed the night with a whopping 45.2% share, more than double its nearest competitor. Seven was 21.8%, TEN 15.2%, ABC 12.9% and SBS 4.8%.

Following State of Origin for Nine were Nine News (1.01m / 1.00m), A Current Affair (912,000), Hot Seat (589,000 / 363,000), World’s Best Commercials (311,000 in 3 cities) and the AFL Footy Show (234,000 in 3 cities).

Seven News (1.13m / 1.04m) was best for Seven then Home and Away (725,000), The Chase (652,000 / 434,000) and House Rules (585,000 in 3 cities). Aussie Property Flippers drew 287,000 / 183,000 in 3 cities, Border Security was 229,000 in 2 cities, and Border Force was 150,000 in 2 cities.

MasterChef Australia was 704,000 for TEN then The Project (603,000 /409,000), TEN Eyewitness News (519,000), Family Feud (375,000) and This is Us (355,000). Madam Secretary drew 195,000.

ABC News (681,000), 7:30 (498,000), Anh’s Brush with Fame (462,000), The Weekly with Charlie Pickering (456,000), You Can’t Ask That (413,000), Grand Designs (272,000), Adam Hills: The Last Leg (149,000), The Warriors (127,000) and Sammy J’s Democratic Party (102,000) comprised ABC’s night.

On SBS it was Tony Robinson’s Coast to Coast (246,000), SBS World News (138,000) and Fargo (121,000).

Peter Rabbit (206,000) bounded to the top of multichannels.

    That last night, had some centurians on. Some parts were funny,sad but very engaging and some good advice for the young ones like myself

  2. David, any word on whether House Rules and/or MasterChef were actually #1 and #2 in their timeslots in either Melbourne, Adelaide or Perth?

    In recent years, sometimes Seven or Ten have stated that they’ve actually beaten State of Origin in their slots in those markets.

    It was very close last night in Melbourne (for example):

    Origin with 319k
    House Rules around 300k
    MasterChef around 300k

    So wouldn’t be surprised.

  3. Pleased to say that Fargo was better last night. Two solid eps that progressed the story nicely. I am going to look at World’s Greatest Dad mugs differently from now on.

      1. Agree that it isn’t as good as the first two seasons but still well worth watching.
        Was always going to be hard to live up to the quality of Season 1 in particular.
        That was perfect…
