Richard Hammond is recovering in a Swiss hospital with a fractured knee following a severe crash while filming The Grand Tour.

He was taking part in a hill climb race on Saturday when the vehicle, a $3.4 million electric supercar, spun off the road, crashing down a hill.

A statement issued by the programme said Hammond was “conscious and talking” following the crash, and had climbed out of the car himself before it burst into flames.

“He was flown by Air Ambulance to hospital in St Gallen to be checked over, revealing a fracture to his knee.

“Nobody else was in the car or involved in the accident, and we’d like to thank the paramedics on site for their swift response.”

The former BBC presenter published a video from his hospital bed, apologising to family and thanking medical staff.

The crash is being investigated.

In 2006 Hammond was lucky to survive the crash of a jet-powered car he was piloting in the UK.
