Sam Newman: “I regret the comments I made about Caitlyn Jenner”

Footy Show star has apologised after comments which offended viewers. Again.

Nine’s Sam Newman has apologised following comments about Caitlyn Jenner he made last night during The Footy Show.

The comments came after his likeness was morphed into a Jenner-lookalike. When asked by Billy Brownless if he knew who Caitlyn Jenner was, Newman replied:

“I know who he … it is.

“Oh well what is she? Is it a he or a she. Is it transgender, is it?”

Today his remarks were slammed, at a time when the AFL has been working towards inclusion for LGBTI fans.

St. Kilda Football Club also said comedy at the expense of transgender people was “no joke” and conveyed their disappointment to Nine.

Sally Goldner, the executive director of Transgender Victoria told The Guardian, “Given the number of times he’s made comments about women and now trans people, how many chances does he get?” Goldner said.

“If he can’t take responsibility for himself, he has to face the consequences.”

Today Newman apologised for his comments.

“I regret the comments I made about Caitlyn Jenner. What I said was not appropriate and I’m sorry to anyone offended,” he said briefly.

His comments are the latest in a string of misdemeanours, notably against journalist Caroline Wilson, some of which have attracted ACMA attention and sponsor criticism.

But producers also need to lift their game.

Putting a mock image of Newman in female clothing is as good as baiting their talent when they know his form, and undermines any inclusion Rebecca Maddern has brought to the show.

  1. I feel sorry for the radio shock jocks who feel the need to defend Sam, Pauline Hanson and Donald Trump every other day. There’s hardly any time left to advertise nursing homes and funeral parlours.

  2. I like Sam, even though some things he says/does are very cringeworthy…
But I think Dave Hughes summed him up perfectly when he was in Sam’s lavish penthouse a few weeks ago on the show: “Jeez Sam, your bulls**t has really paid off”. Nicely said and so so true.

  3. I still can’t believe this tripe of a man still has a job on network television. He may draw viewing numbers (although these have slipped dramatically over the years) but his demeanor and behaviour is deplorable. Why he keeps getting away with it astounds me.

  4. No one has spoken about The Footy Show in months. A set up is concocted by prods & Newman and voila! It’s the top trending subject. It’s time to stop giving these dinosaurs the oxygen they crave
