SBS shutting down online Comedy portal

Curtain down on platform to promote emerging and mainstream comics after 3 years.

SBS is ending its online SBS Comedy platform, which includes comedy articles and video, after 3 years.

A small team of editors and freelance writers are understood to be impacted by the change.

An SBS spokesperson said: “SBS has recently undergone a review of our websites and is making changes within its online team dedicated to exploring particular topics to direct more investment into distinctive content that goes to the heart of our Charter, ensure our content teams have a greater multiplatform focus in the creation and delivery of content across genres, and to simplify internal structures.”

SBS Comedy was established in March 2014 designed to promote emerging and mainstream comics and help shape the comedy landscape in Australia. It included the Comedy Runway initiative to fund and assist new comedy web pilots, which included Top Knot Detective.

SBS had recently indicated staff cuts would be necessary following funding cuts and a failure to increase primetime advertising.

“While the SBS Comedy website will no longer continue, our investment in comedy and satire is continuing but will be more focused on video content,” the spokesperson said.

Going forward SBS comedy and satire online content will now be managed out of The Feed.
