Publicist Chris Chamberlin, who joined ABC’s Sydney unit in 2014, has died whilst holidaying in India, aged 39.

Details surrounding his death have not been released.

Chamberlin rose fast within ABC ranks, where he was largely responsible for news programmes including 7:30, Foreign Correspondent, Q&A and News Breakfast.

Most recently he was Acting Communications Manager in the Sydney office where he was to oversee all ABC shows for the past few months.

After a busy period he was enjoying a 6 week extended holiday, “out of reach and getting my ‘OM’ on in India.”

Prior to his role at ABC, Chamberlin was a film publicist.

ABC’s director of audiences, Leisa Bacon, said in an email to staff Chamberlin was a “star” who excelled at his job.

“Chris was highly regarded and respected by everyone who was lucky enough to have known him,” she said. “Chris has made many friends through his work at the ABC and I know I speak on behalf of everyone by saying Chris will be greatly missed. Personally, I will miss his witty takes on pop culture and politics, which could always brighten your day.”

I had many occasions to deal with Chris, and he was always professional, amusing and prompt to respond to my weird and wonderful questions. Just a delight to work with. Today’s news is a sad shock to colleagues, given his young age.

A Go Fund Me page has been set up to raise money to cover funeral expenses.

  1. Deeply shocking and hard to believe. One of the nicest guys in the business and a wonderful and loyal friend to everyone he met. Hard to imagine a world without his kindness and smile. My thoughts are with those closest to him, especially his family who he loved more than anything. This one really hurts. RIP Chris.
