X-Files gender problem: #TheFutureisFemale

Gillian Anderson is unimpressed that X-Files has all-male writers and 2 of 207 episodes directed by women.

X-Files star Gillian Anderson has delivered a serve to FOX and producers, unhappy over the show’s gender imbalance in key creative roles.

The Washington Post questioned why the show’s Season 11 writer’s room is comprised only of males.

Creator Chris Carter will be joined by series veterans Glen Morgan, Darin Morgan and James Wong plus three newcomers: Gabe Rotter, Benjamin Van Allen, and Brad Follmer.

Anderson responded with a tweet:

Anderson has previously revealed that during the original series it took her three seasons to close the pay gap between herself and David Duchovny. For the 2016 revival she was once again offered half of Duchovny, before negotiating her way to parity.

The X-Files is expected to return during the 2017-2018 US season.

  1. Well I suppose Gillian can withhold her services if she feels strongly enough about it, but the financial penalties may be a bit much even for her to bare, this smacks of another publicity gimmick as happened last season with her moaning about not having income parity with Duchovny. I think the point that should be understood about this matter is that writers familiar with the expectations of viewers are important for shows like X Files, which do have a strong male following.

    1. We should add that it has a strong female following too. Your comment implies only males can write drama for males and females for females, but I think in 2017 we have moved beyond this.
