BBC salaries revealed

A plan to keep BBC salaries secret was blocked by UK government ministers.

Salaries of 96 BBC presenters in Radio & Television have been revealed, after a plan to keep the pay secret was blocked by government ministers.

Amongst the salaries paid:

Chris Evans £2.2 million (A$3.61 million)
Claudia Winkleman between £400,000 (A$656,800) and £450,000 (A$738,900)
Gary Lineker £1.79 million (A$2.94 million)
Graham Norton £899,000 (A$1.47 million)
Huw Edwards £600,000 (A$958,000)
Fiona Bruce £399,000 (A$650,500)
Danni Minogue £200,000 – £249,999 (up to $A410,000)
Peter Capaldi £200,000 – £250,000 (up to $A410,000)
John McEnroe £199,999 (A$326,000)

However it doesn’t include money stars receive from other sources such as production companies or BBC Worldwide, which is the commercial arm. It also fails to distinguish between those with just one job and multiple ones inside the organisation.

Several years ago The Australian controversially revealed salaries of ABC staff.

    1. Chris Evans does a very popular daily national radio show. I would expect GN would get a decent cut of the profits from the worldwide sale of his show, this is not included in his salary.

    1. To me it’s human nature. People usually want more than they’ve got. As your income rises, so your spending rises. Eventually $1m/year does not seem enough so you want 5% more or to re-nogotiate your contract.
I remember 20 years ago when my current salary seemed out of reach and luxurious. Now it seems reasonable for my expenses and lifestyle.

    1. Although Lord Hall has promised parity in gender salaries by 2020, and has also said that Jodie Whittaker should be on the same money as Capaldi.
I understand that BBC is a public broadcaster, and therefore must be seen to not be throwing money around, but when you consider the kind of money that the cast of Friends, or Big Bang have been getting, it’s surprising that the lead actor in a program as big as Doctor Who is making a quarter of the salary for a thirteen episode run that some actors are making in USA per episode!

  1. Sadly, perhaps we now have a hint of a factor in why Peter Capaldi left Doctor Who. There have been rumblings that he wanted a pay rise and was declined.
