By tomorrow we will know which actor is to succeed Peter Capaldi as the 13th Doctor in Doctor Who.

The BBC will announce the casting outcome following the Wimbledon’s Men’s Finals. That’s expected to be sometime after midnight tonight, AEST.

UK media articles are tipping former Death in Paradise star Kris Marshall. There has been speculation new showrunner Chris Chibnall may announce a female or black Doctor.

According to the bookies the favourites are:

Jodie Whittaker 5/4
Kris Marshall 2
Phoebe Waller-Bridge 4
Tom Rosenthal 8
Vicky McClure 10

In one of his few interviews on the topic, new showrunner Chris Chibnall wouldn’t address the calls for a female lead directly, saying only: “Nothing is ruled out but I don’t want the casting to be a gimmick and that’s all I can say.”

The new Doctor will make their debut at Christmas in Doctor Who‘s annual festive special, before taking up the reins full-time in 2018.

  1. Would prefer Paul McGann over all of these bookies’ favourites.
He was never really considered a proper doctor because of the very ordinary Doctor Who movie he featured in. He was great as the Doctor despite the limitations of that movie and should be given another chance to shine.

        1. I love Richard, but I struggle to see him balancing his brilliantly off-kilter comic timing with the more serious aspects of the Doctor’s personality. I’m really hoping for a female Doctor. I think it’s time.

    1. He has been given another a chance to shine, thanks to wonderful people at Big Finish audio McGann’s Doctor has had adventures for the past 16 years. And he did appear during the 50th Anniversary celebrations.

  2. I a well and truly over the constant hype of the current iteration of the show-only watched one ep of the last season and was very disappointed in it-they could make Davros the new Doctor and I wouldn’t be moved.

  3. Do you have any idea where we in Australia will be able to watch the announcement ‘live’? Ie will the abc screen the announcement sometime after its aired in the UK? It’d be great to watch it spoiler free rather than just learning it from a news site. Could be hard though.

    1. Agreed, I wanna watch it live, too. I’m a flight attendant and for Capaldi’s announcement, I was on an overnight trip in Darwin, sick as a dog with a head cold, but I stayed up til 2.30am just to watch it in the hotel. It was very exciting.

      1. I think it’s just a trailer at the end of the men’s tennis finals, so will be no doubt all over media by 630pm GMT. Last time they did a live show for Capaldi I think I remember it was already speculated that he was favourite. I’m really hoping it won’t be Kris Marshall. He’s been terrible in Death in Paradise.
