HBO closing in on more True Detective

Mahershala Ali will play the lead if HBO green lights a third season of crime drama.

A third season for True Detective is looking strong.

HBO president of programming Casey Bloys updated the situation on the HBO crime drama at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

“I have read five scripts for a third season and I think they are terrific,” Bloys said. “We have a deal with Mahershala Ali to play the lead. Right now, we are talking to directors. When we find a director that we want to hire we’ll be a go for that.”

That makes a change from his last statement where he was unsure if HBO had the right take for a third season.

Compared to more of The Night Of, he added, “We’re much closer on True Detective.”

Deadwood‘s David Milch and True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto are working together on the third season.

  1. If this third season goes ahead its bound to be put through the critical mill, problem for the shows producers is that the first season set a standard that was difficult to match. The choice of actors weakened season 2 and the story lacked any tangible evil, but if any of Deadwood’s coarse personality becomes apparent, True Detective season 3 will be intriguing to watch.
