Returning: Versailles

Raunchy period drama is back on SBS later this month, including with Aussie Greta Scacchi.

British-Franco-Canadian period drama Versailles returns to SBS later this month with more raunchy tales of King Louis XIV.

George Blagden returns as the Sun King, with new cast additions including Italian-Australian Greta Scacchi and Harry Hadden-Paton from Downton Abbey.

Marshall Heald, SBS Director of Television and Online Content, said: “SBS is excited to bring this epic cinematic drama to Australian audiences for a second season. Filmed on location at the Chateau de Versailles in Paris, Versailles gives us a glimpse of the luxurious lifestyle of the last French monarchs.”

Season 2 had its Euro premiere in March.

The lavish and acclaimed 17th century drama returns to SBS for a much-anticipated second season on 27 July. Set in the royal court of Louis XIV, the 10-part season depicts the decadent and turbulent early reign of the Sun King.

King Louis XIV sees the dream of his grand Versailles palace crumbling before his eyes. With phase one of the palace complete, most of France’s eminent lords and ladies now live under the Sun King’s roof, locked in a constant battle for supremacy.

Drugs, gambling and alcohol are rampant, as nobles begin to poison each other in order to get closer to the king and climb the social ladder. Surrounded by darkness and depravity, he loses his sense of purpose – but can he discover the path back to light and redemption to save his vision of Versailles?

The series stars George Blagden (King Louis XIV), Alexander Vlahos (Philippe d’Orléans), Elisa Lasowski (Queen Marie-Therese), Anna Brewster (Madame de Montespan), Tygh Runyan (Fabien), Evan Williams (Chevalier) and Stuart Bowman (Botnemps).

Historical and fictional characters, flamboyant nobles, beautiful courtesans and humble servants guide us through this intoxicating world of secrets, betrayals, love and war. This is Versailles in all its brutal glory.

Season two premieres as a double episode on Thursday 27 July at 8.30pm and continues Thursdays at 9.30pm on SBS.

Episode one will be available to stream on SBS On Demand from Thursday 20 July.

  1. Have been waiting for this. Excellent timing – after spending three weeks cycling around modern France I’ll then be transported back to the same place 300 years earlier.
