Your ratings questions answered

Updated: Been wondering what your favourite show has rated but it just never cracks a mention?

There have been over 9100 shows on Free to Air TV in the first half of the 2017 ratings year.

But while My Kitchen Rules, Australian Ninja Warrior and MasterChef Australia may hog the limelight, there are thousands of other titles you just never hear about.

So how did Air Crash Investigations, The Ellen de Generes Show, The Amazing Race, The Mysteries of Laura, Speechless, Kevin Can Wait and Bates Motel rate?

TV Tonight has numbers for every Free to Air show for the first half of the ratings year, until July 15. As a one-off gesture for your undying loyalty this year I’m happy to answer questions on some of those more obscure titles which, until now, I have been unable to report.

If you have a show you have been wondering about leave a comment below and I will do my best.

These numbers are a series average and are based on various codings in either the 5 city metro or regional markets.

Remember, coding is a complicated labyrinth, so answers may not be always be single figure. Numbers will be Overnight unless you request 7 or 28 day Consolidated.

I just ask you to be reasonable in your requests and patient in awaiting replies.

Cheers, David!

UPDATED: Sorry guys, OzTAM have requested I no longer answer any more ratings requests in this post. It was fun while it lasted!

Regretfully I can’t publish any more requests.

  1. Well done David for this genius idea. It was great while it lasted. Disappointed I didn’t get a chance to comment sooner but thankfully half of my questions were answered (Empire and SHIELD). Only ones not were MacGyver 2016 and Speechless. Oh well back to forever wondering…

  2. What’s the official number below which a figure isn’t considered to be statistically accurate?

I know the UK figures always used to have a warning attached that anything below 250,000 wasn’t to be treated as accurate. And the shows that rated below that number had audience figures that varied wildly in % terms from episode to episode.

  3. Thanks for treating the loyal fans! Hope you didn’t get in to too much trouble!
Wonder if OZTAM expects the regular viewer to buy their ratings? I bet I couldn’t afford it and find it too narrow. Did they know Aria use streaming to track popular music songs and albums?

    1. That’s a shame – don’t think its hurting anyone but I guess they see it as giving away information they would normally charge for. Love seeing the other end of the ratings spectrum.

I remember once having a thing called the ‘000’s report sent to be by mistake – it showed ratings figures in ‘000s for every single channel in 15 minute blocks from 2am-2am on every single FTA channel including multis. Very surprising the numbers for home shopping shows among other things.

    2. Hi David, why were they so upset by what you were doing? It’s freedom of information anyway to some degree isn’t it? Thanks for thinking of us all in the first place by trying – was amazing of you!

  4. One question l have always wanted to know but doubt it can be answered is this… Do encores encourage people to watch a show when its aired for the original day? In other words do people take up viewing the show on virgin airing after watching an encore?

    1. In answer to your question, possibly.
I’m not sure how Australia ratings work, but certainly in the U.K. they use a +7 and a +28 method. This takes into account every viewer who may record the program and watch it at a later date, and perhaps may watch the program on a computer platform like iViewer.
