“Not our Homeland”: angry fans buy full page ad to blast producers

Aggrieved US fans of Homeland get vocal about the death of a TV character.

Aggrieved US fans of Homeland took the unusual step of buying a full page ad in the Hollywood Reporter in an open letter to producers.

Collectively signed #NotOurHomeland they lamented the death of Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend) in Season 6.

“It has been over four months since your sixth season concluded,” reads the letter. “In the midst of a mass exodus of your most loyal and devoted viewers, we have asked repeatedly for you to address your audience and the unceremonious end to a character that you openly acknowledge was beloved by millions. You have been silent. We are asking again.”

Creator Alex Gansa gave THR the following statement: “It is painful to hear that that even a small segment of our devoted audience is disappointed in Homeland. Until now, I have refrained from commenting publicly on the death of Peter Quinn, believing that Rupert Friend’s heart-wrenching performance should speak for itself. I have not changed my view. Suffice to say that I mourn the loss of Peter Quinn as much as anybody and that the character was created not to denigrate but to honor the men and women who devote their lives to keeping America safe. In my eyes, he died a hero.”

Whilst the group is less than 4 weeks old, and has under 100 Twitter followers, a website claims there have been tens of thousands of tweets expressing confusion, grief, and outrage, and it has raised $4,200 has been raised for veterans charity the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.

  1. They aren’t Homeland fans and from their comments and total lack of detail they don’t appear to have even watched any of S6. They are just trying to gain attention for their own agenda. As it’s “not their Homeland” they should leave it alone.

  2. I will miss Quinn too but that’s just ridiculous.

The first two listed points make out that the show supposedly has a wide remit of responsibility for things that, as fiction, it clearly isn’t responsible for, and then in the last para they accuse Homeland of forgetting that it is a TV show? Huh?

  3. In my opinion, the stupidest thing they could have done was kill off Brody… and they did it.
Claire Danes is great, but it was her and Damien Lewis that made the show… since then it has felt like a completely different show, and one that has never lived up to when he was in it. I have hung on… barely… even though for the most part i couldn’t be bothered with it… but the last season was it for me i think… it’s too frustrating to watch something that used to be so damn good.
It should be said that the only saving grace from this season was Rupert Friends performance… he really nailed it.

  4. Wow…some people really take their TV serious….I think maybe we need to breathe and go for a walk in the park and smell the roses….?!?

    1. Agreed, Rupert Friends character Quinn was always working in the background in dark roles until Carrie lost Brodie and he became her platonic guardian angel, Quinns final season finally revealed the sexual grooming he received from Dal Adal (F.Murray Abraham) which ultimately had him become a cold CIA killer until Carrie came along. Quinn was looking to end himself long before the damage done in season 5, season 6 was all about Quinn.
