Death in Paradise suspends filming as hurricane slams Caribbean

Filming is suspended in Guadeloupe as Irma devastates nearby Barbuda, Antigua and Puerto Rico.

UK drama Death in Paradise has suspended filming in Guadeloupe in the Caribbean due to Hurricane Irma.

Irma, the most powerful hurricane ever recorded over the Atlantic, is making landfall in Puerto Rico after slamming the islands of Barbuda and Antigua. At least three deaths have been reported on the islands of St. Bartholomew and St. Martin and reports cite 900,000 without power in Puerto Rico.

It is understood that Guadeloupe is not expected to be hit directly by Irma but producers Red Planet Pictures told Radio Times, “The Death in Paradise production team are in constant contact with the authorities in Guadeloupe and as soon as the red alert was signalled, filming was suspended immediately. The safety of the cast and crew remains paramount and when we are given the all-clear, filming will recommence.”

Irma is currently a Category 5, the highest possible on the hurricane scale. It packs winds of 185 mph, making it one of the most powerful Atlantic storms ever recorded and its path still remains unpredictable. There are fears it could turn towards Florida in the US this weekend.

Death in Paradise is mid-way through filming series seven of the series with former Father Ted star Ardal O’Hanlon taking the lead from Kris Marshall.
