Gold Coast wins Logie Awards

Updated: Gold Coast to host Logies for the next 4 years with 60th event in July.

  • Gold Coast wins Logie Awards for next 4 years
  • To be held in July at the Star Casino
  • Nine Network as host broadcaster

The Logie Awards 2018 will be held on the Gold Coast, despite a push by Destination NSW to land TV’s night of nights.

The Courier Mail and Gold Coast Bulletin indicate the Star Casino is the venue choice with TV Week editor Emma Nolan, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate to front a press conference this morning on the Today show.

Awkwardly, Today host Karl Stefanovic said this week he would boycott the event if they were not held in Melbourne.

Tourism and Events Queensland has reportedly also leveraged an advertising deal that will see Queensland Tourism advertisements feature across the range of Bauer Group publications.

Still to be determined is a date for the event, with the Commonwealth Games to be staged from April 4 -15.

The 60th Logie Awards will be the first ever been held in Queensland.

Updated: TV WEEK is pleased to announce that the TV WEEK Logie Awards are heading to Queensland’s Gold Coast from 2018.

The move is part of a four-year deal with the Queensland Government and Tourism And Events Queensland. It marks the first time the iconic Australian event has been held in the Sunshine State.

The 2018 TV WEEK Logie Awards will be held in July at The Star Gold Coast, while broadcast partner the Nine Network will once again bring all the action to viewers across the country.

As an established destination that attracts many local and international productions, Queensland is the perfect location to host the TV WEEK Logie Awards.

The TV WEEK Logies are Australia’s most popular and talked about awards show and red carpet event. This year’s broadcast by the Nine Network easily dominated the TV ratings across all key demographics. It pulled in an average national audience of 1.27 million viewers, peaking at 1.79 million.

The awards also saw record numbers across the brand’s digital platforms. There were more than 1.1 million page views on the official TV WEEK Logies website, as well as a Facebook reach of more than four million people.

Jayne Ferguson, General Manager, Women’s Lifestyle & Entertainment at Bauer Media, says TV WEEK is delighted to be partnering with the Queensland Government, Tourism And Events Queensland, The Star Entertainment Group and the Nine Network to bring the TV WEEK Logie Awards to Queensland for the first time.

“The Logies have enjoyed considerable support over the many years they have been held in Melbourne,” she says. “But it’s the right time, as we celebrate our 60th year, for us to share that excitement with another great Australian city. We look forward to the Gold Coast hosting television’s night of nights in 2018 and beyond.”

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has welcomed the announcement.

“My Government’s commitment to the TV WEEK Logies is a great investment in Queensland,” the Premier said.

“Queensland has rightfully earned a reputation as the powerhouse of Australia’s film industry, but increasingly we’re taking that role in television as well, for both domestic and international productions.

“We look forward to bringing Australia’s greatest television performers to the Gold Coast, showcasing both the strength of our industry and the appeal of Queensland.”

Tourism And Major Events Minister Kate Jones adds: “The TV WEEK Logie Awards is a great coup for our state and will drive momentum in attracting quality local and international events.”

Geoff Hogg, The Star Entertainment Group Managing Director Queensland, says hosting the Logies is a great opportunity to show off the updated venue.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase the transformation of our property. We are investing up to $850 million, with a new luxury suite hotel to open before the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and approvals received for a new hotel and apartment tower. Our existing hotel rooms have also been refurbished to a luxurious level while new award winning dining options have been established. We are thrilled to be hosting the TV WEEK Logie Awards.”

Hugh Marks, Nine Network CEO, says: “The Nine Network is honoured to continue our relationship with TV WEEK to broadcast the TV WEEK Logie Awards and we plan to make them bigger and better with this move to Queensland. Thanks to Premier Palasczuk and the team in Queensland for their enthusiastic support for our industry night of nights.”

  1. I’m surprised so many people care one way or another. I rarely watch it these days, never heard of most of the contestants, and couldn’t care less where the ceremony is held.

  2. What I don’t understand is why the Casinos involved don’t foot the bill. They are the ones who make most of the money. Wouldn’t most of the celebs fly in, fly out and stay in the Casino anyway. They are just building a brand new hotel extension there again as well.

  3. Don’t have an issue with the location (they are made for each other after all, I think) but the timing is completely wrong. Should have stuck with Crown for 2018 and looked to secure an earlier slot at Star for 2019.

  4. It is a good move by the Gold Coast though. They don’t have many TV stars so everyone will have to fly in, creating a economic boost and a lot of exposure for the Gold Coast. Timing is woeful and will damage the Logies credibility. With the campaign style voting now, the Logies credibility is a bit shot anyway. As a Queenslander, the hosting gig should go to Kerri-Anne. She would rock it.

  5. my guess is Karl will front the today show with lisa after the morning after the logies.
David- we will see the logies in July, when will the voting start and how long will we have to vote for.

      1. I agree with the comments about July being too late. July is also the coldest month of the year on the Gold Coast (rivalled only by August), so the red carpet arrivals will be interesting. Still, it’s not like winter in the southern states.

Star is an extremely popular venue for concerts, so as David suggested, it wouldn’t have been easy to find a spare week in the calendar (I wonder if Movie World put in a bid to host it? They don’t have an auditorium, though, so I’m guessing not). When rumours surfaced earlier this week about the move, I thought they would still happen in April (straight after the Commonwealth Games), so July was a major surprise. Regarding the travel involved, it only affects those who live in Melbourne, since the networks had to fly anyone from Sydney down south anyway (which, I’m guessing, is around 70% of industry professionals).

  6. July is a stupid time of year to be presenting awards from the previous years. It should have stayed in April/May or better yet have been moved to the first Sunday of ratings in February.

The Gold Coast move is stupid. These things have to be in Melbourne or Sydney as this is where the bulk of television is produced from.

    1. Couldn’t agree with you more. July is simply stupid. I guess to have it in February some may argue it’s too hot and the celebs faces would melt on the carpet. Picture that for a second….
However, It should kick off the ratings year, makes far more sense!

      1. Might as well go back to having it on the cruise ship and making a real mess of it! Who is even going to remember what aired in the first quarter the previous year FFS???

    2. Absolutely agree with the sentiment that a July Logies is silly, especially if it’s the first time outside Sydney/Melbourne for the event.

We still could have had a late April/early May Logies (esp. with the 2yrs negotiation towards this): held in Brisbane instead of the GC in 2018, if QLD Govt/Star Entertainment, had to bend to Bauer’s needs instead of the availability of space on the GC being a factor.

Remember: $1m, divided up, equals around 25c per Queenslander.
I and many others in this state want more than that 25c worth back, in the end.

  7. That is great news – a Karl Stefanovic-free Logies! Oh good, we can all look forward to watching this without him being generally obnoxious and messy. As usual. Thanks so much, Annastacia Palaszczuk.

  8. Seems crazy to have them in Qld. Most channels have HQ in NSW. With rising costs of travel & motels l would think Sydney or near Sydney would be the best place. Daylight saving is probably still in play at that time of year as well??
