Renewed: The Checkout

But it could be sometime before another sketch show with the full Chaser cast.

Favourite ABC consumer show The Checkout will be back in 2018 according to Giant Dwarf’s Chas Licciardello.

Chatting recently with TV Tonight about upcoming projects he said, “The Checkout is coming back next year. We’re not exactly sure when, but it is coming back. After that we’re not sure. We have a lot of ideas. Certainly Giant Dwarf is pitching a bunch of shows, some of which are small ensemble shows, and some which are big ensemble shows.”

But fans waiting to see the Chaser team in another sketch show cold be waiting a while. At least, nothing with Licciardello, Andrew Hansen, Julian Morrow, Craig Reucassel and Chris Taylor alone.

“I don’t think there will be a show with the original War on Everything people by themselves. But a number of us are hoping to work on (new) shows and as you know our team has grown quite significantly since then,” he continued.

“While we got away with it at the time I think it’s increasingly hard to have a show with 5 middle-aged white men.

“People come up to me in the street and ask ‘When’s the War coming back?’ They don’t say ‘When’s The Hamster Wheel coming back?’”

Licciardello thinks there may have been too many changes socially to allow another stunt show to fire.

“If there was going to be a stunt show it would have to be different to the War on Everything because the world is a very different place. We had massive issues in our final year with mobile phone cameras. Whenever we started filming there were 50 mobile phone cameras within minutes. So that ruins the shot, so you have to move, which makes it extremely inefficient to film,” he explained.

“And if you thought we faced controversy in 2009, try in 2017 with the way Facebook & Twitter are now. Every second thing we would do would be all over social media well before it went to air and everyone would hate us!

“So it would be very hard to make the show now.”
