Lionel Richie stuck on American Idol

Now we know why Lionel Richie’s Australian tour has been postponed.
He has signed on as a judge to the new-look American Idol.
Richie joins Katy Perry and country music’s Luke Bryan on the revived talent show, alongside returning host Ryan Seacrest.
“I am very excited to be joining Katy, Luke and Ryan on American Idol,” said Richie. “As a singer, songwriter and producer, I feel I can bring a great deal of experience to the table. It’s going to be so much fun!”
“Luke and Lionel are the perfect additions to round out our panel of judges for American Idol on ABC,” said Channing Dungey, president, ABC Entertainment. “In their respective genres of music, both Luke and Lionel possess insurmountable popularity and award-winning talent that are undeniable, and we are lucky that they will help in paving the way for hopefuls pursuing their dreams on our stage.”
Shooting of auditions is set to begin Tuesday and while a premiere date is yet to be confirmed, but is tipped for March.
Richie’s Aussie tour, which was originally set to begin in Perth yesterday, will now take place from March 25 – April 8.

March would fit in with Katy’s touring schedule (she finishes the North American leg of her world tour in early February and then the European leg starts mid May). Lionel has, no doubt, negotiated a two-week break into his contract to allow for him to come to Australia (watch for a “Guy Sebastian X Factor type satellite cross for the live shows in those two weeks).
Lionel ended up cancelling his Brisbane show and replacing it with a slot at Bluesfest at Byron Bay. They offered ticket holders the chance to swap their ticket for a full day pass to Bluesfest, but I decided that a General Admission standing ticket to an outdoor festival wasn’t equivalent to my fourth row centre ticket for Lionel, so I requested a refund. The Bluesfest people said they completely understood!
