Socceroos World Cup qualifier: Australia vs Syria

This. Is. It.

It’s do or die for the Socceroos’ World Cup dreams when they take on Syria on Tuesday at ANZ Stadium in Sydney.

After a 1-1 draw last Thursday the Socceroos must win or not concede more than one goal in a draw against Syria to qualify for Russia 2018.

Nine’s Director of Sport, Tom Malone, said: “The Socceroos were agonisingly close to automatic qualification and now the pressure is really on. Australia has a proud history of performing when the chips are down and this game against Syria invokes memories of the famous 2005 victory against Uruguay to break our World Cup drought.”

The pressure to deliver is huge on Socceroos’ coach Ange Postecoglou and his squad, featuring stars Tim Cahill, Aaron Mooy and Tom Rogic, who are desperate to keep intact the Socceroos’ record as World Cup finalists since 2006.

Syria are the unlikely success story of this campaign, overcoming all the odds and seeking to make an appearance at their first ever World Cup, despite representing a nation ravaged by civil war and unable to play at home.

Wide World of Sports will broadcast the match Live and Free with coverage from 7.30pm (AEDT time) on 9GO! tomorrow night.

Former Socceroo Craig Moore joins the Wide World of Sports commentary team for the sudden death fixture, alongside regular WWOS football expert Michael Bridges and host Clint Stanaway.

  1. Given that the Syrian team is backed by and represents a brutal regime that allegedly drops chemical weapons on its own people (as one of the many crimes the Syrian government is accused of), forgive me if I say “:go the Socceroos!”

  2. Do they ever win one? I am not a soccer fan but always try to follow anything Aussies are competing in on the world stage but it just seems to me that they never come up with a good win??

    1. Think it’s clear that you actually don’t follow the Socceroos. Not counting “friendlies”, they’ve played 20 qualifying matches so far for next year’s world cup, winning 13 and losing 2.

Also won the Asian Cup in 2015 if that’s not ancient history.

  3. This is a do-or-die match for both of these sides. If 1 of them win, then they will have to play in an inter confederation play-offs on 6 and 14 Nov. I’m not sure about Aussies at the moment as the side have struggled during the 2nd half against Syria in Malaysia.

  4. While I’d normally cheer Australia on, I’m going to have to side with Syria on this one. They’ve been devastated by such unspeakable calamities that their nation deserves some good fortune, even if that happens to be in the form of something as trivial as a game of football.

    1. Given the way the Socceroos have been performing I don’t think they deserve a trip to Moscow. Interesting that the game last week from Malaysia was on 9’s primary channel but this week back to Go. Probably won’t make much difference as far as interest goes.

      1. Last week the game started at 11pm Eastern – so why not put it on the main channel.
This week 7.30pm – so why would they put it on the main channel – they have the Block on which will be 1 million plus – soccers’ not going to pull a million plus unless its finals in the actual world cup.
