Talent camp for emerging creatives

14 emerging creatives from under-represented groups are part of a Talent Camp this week in Victoria.

Script editor and screenwriter Clea Frost and Producer Kath Shelper leading a Victorian-based Talent camp this week featuring 14 emerging creatives from under-represented groups.

The five day workshop will cover the basics of story development, identifying audiences, distribution and pathways for film, TV and digital projects.

Minister for Creative Industries, Martin Foley said, “Victoria is a creative state and one that is proud of its diversity. Our support for Talent Camp VIC is part of our commitment to ensuring that Victorians from diverse backgrounds can unlock their creative potential, see themselves reflected on screen and forge creative careers. I can’t wait to see the stories and projects that will result.”

Film Victoria CEO, Jenni Tosi said, “Participants represent the wide-ranging and dynamic communities that more closely reflect Victoria’s diverse population. They each have unique stories to tell and we hope this opportunity sets them up for a flourishing career in the screen industry.”

The Talent Camp is supported by Film Victoria, the Australian Film Television & Radio School (AFTRS) and Screen Australia.

The 14 are:

Alistair Baldwin – a Melbourne-based screenwriter, Alistair’s work as a critic and commentator has been published in Art+Australia Journal, SBS Comedy and Archer & more. He was also the host and co-producer of Lemon Comedy – a monthly night dedicated to championing diversity in stand-up.

Andinet Teshome Shiferaw – raised in a rural town in Ethiopia, Andinet has chased his dream of becoming a filmmaker, participating in more than 12 films, TV and theatre projects, and finally, is making his own film.

Ez Eldin Deng – an independent filmmaker from South Sudan, Ez and his family migrated to Australia for a brighter future where he found filmmaking as a language to speak to his community, and the wider Australian society.

Gina Lambropoulos – a screenwriting graduate from RMIT and Joy FM producer/presenter, Gina is currently working on the next draft of her script The Princess and the Bear with Matthewswood Productions which wont he 2016 Open Channel/Australian Writer’s Guild – New Writer’s Script Competition for Best Feature Script.

Grace Feng – a writer, photographer, filmmaker and practicing translator, Grace is actively engaged with the multilingual and trans-cultural space, producing works in Chinese and in English languages. She writes for Australia Plus, ABC, Peril Magazine and holds a Master of Creative Media (TV and Film Production) at RMIT.

Jack Sheppard – a member of the Kurtjar Clan of Far North Queensland Jack is a mutli-disciplinary artist who works in the fields of physical theatre, film, circus and poetry which, through story-telling, he uses as a form of empowerment for the First Nations community and the broader community.

Llewellyn Michael Bates – an AACTA-AFI nominated screenwriter and producer whose collaborative short film Nathan Loves Ricky Martin, won multi awards including the 2016 Script Pipeline First Look Project.

Natesha Somasundaram – an emerging writer based in Melbourne Natesha completed a Bachelor of Performing Arts in 2016 and for the past two years has focused on the craft of writing for live performance, which will now extend to film and television.

Nikki Tran (pictured) – a writer and producer, Nikki’s short screenplay When We Run, set after the war in 70s Vietnam, was a finalist in the BlueCat Screenplay Competition. Her latest production Fresh! is a comedy web series celebrating the migrant experience in Australia.

Penny Moore – An independent filmmaker and freelance artist Penny has over 15 years of experience in the film and television industry. She has worked extensively as a writer and has a passion for directing and working in a collaborative environment to pursue a unified vision of a project.

Ravi Chand – with a background in event management and booking, Ravi has been working on a career in film & TV for over 10 years. After writing his first feature film, Ravi is now developing a script for a crime drama series.

Rebekah Robertson – an emerging performer and theatre maker, Rebekah recently played the title role in Kirana with the National Theatre of Parramatta, Gena in Bachelorette with Twelve Angry, Amber in Lightie and more. She has created and presented Sugarush, Slow Dance and Give Up at Melbourne Fringe.

Santilla Chingaipe – an award-winning journalist and documentary filmmaker Santilla spent seven years working for SBS World News where she interviewed some of Africa’s most prominent leaders from Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania and Zambia. Her work explores contemporary migration, cultural identities and politics. She writes regularly for The Saturday Paper.

Steven Arriagada – an award winning writer, producer and director, Steven’s latest drama project Nathan Loves Ricky Martin was nominated for an AFI / AACTA Award. His experience spans live television broadcast, high end TVC’s and event coverage for some of Australia’s largest brands and musical acts.

Thomas Banks – writer, performer and actor, Thomas spent five years developing his own one man show called Someone like Thomas Banks, which toured Victoria for 18 months. He runs his own training business called Centre for Access, delivering training around disability and access to a broad range of clients.
